Help! My Deluxe Reverb is sick.

Post by Telliot » Sun Dec 21, 2014 12:45 am

Suddenly, my SFDR is making a weird sound on the reverb channel about 20 minutes or so after startup. It gets louder and quieter with the volume knob, and it doesn't matter if I switch the reverb or tremolo on or off. It doesn't sound at all on the dry channel. The consistency at which this begins to happen makes me think it must be temperature related, otherwise why wouldn't it start right away or sometimes after two hours or not at all, right?

I'm not very knowledgeable when it comes to repairing amps and generally try to stay away from any DIY stuff as my kids would likely appreciate seeing me in the audience at their graduation ceremony rather than trying to erase the memory of their father burnt to a crisp next to an open amp chassis. Keeping that in mind, can I fix this on my own, or should I take it to my amp guy?

Bad tube? Bad capacitor?

Bonfire / eggfrying sounds like a bad cap.

Try the Reverb driver tube first. It's the easiest thing to try first.
My PR eats reverb tubes and sometimes they sound like this when they start to go. If you hear a pinging sound your tube could be going microphonic.

Find a wooden pencil or an old chopstick and give each tube a little tap. Microphonic tubes you'll hear through the speaker.

Should've watched your video first. :fp:

This could be something else entirely. But I'd still recommend trying to swap tubes.
Remove each preamp tube one by one and see if one of those are the culprit first.

It could be a cap, but I'd not go chasing that until tubes are sorted it first.

You mean just remove it, or swap it with another tube? I also don't really know the tube layout back there. Like I said, I'm clueless when it comes to the guts of an amp.

probably just a bad preamp tube. remove V2 and see if the sound goes away. If not, put it back and pull out V4. if that doesn't work, let me know.

Bummer about your amp.
I'd hoped you were taking things up a notch and going for street-cred like, 'yo, dawg! My Deluxe Reverb is SICK, BROZ!'.
Talk to the younger demo on their terms - know what I'm sayin?!

All joking aside... I do hope you get it sorted out and it doesn't cost you a small fortune.

Cause... like... y'know...
Those amps ARE sick props to your peeps and peace out, dope, word, hype, fresh yo! 8)

My SF VR made noise sort of like that no matter what channel. I had tried tube swaps and such.

I watched your video, then went to try the volume knobs (nothing plugged in). Tried both channel volumes and reverb... tried again to see if it was more or less noise depending on different things...

Problem lessened and is gone now! :wtf:

I'm wondering if it was just a dirty volume pot. :-[ ;D

Okay, so I turned my amp on tonight and right away it was hissing and popping, so I turned it off and simply swapped V1 and V2, thinking it would just move the problem over to the non-reverb channel. Since doing that it's been dead quiet. I'm assuming the tube that was in the V2 spot is going bad, or maybe I knocked something around inside it when I swapped it out?

bad tube. Do you still have the same tubes in there when I sold it to you? I can't remember but I may have put some vintage tubes in there.

I had it gone through last year and some of the caps and tubes were swapped out for NOS, but I don't remember which ones now.
