NAD: Yamaha G5 (1970s)

Post by rhythmjones » Tue Apr 16, 2024 11:20 am

Backstory: in the day I had a Yamaha G30-112 from the late 70s. It was pretty beat up, someone had replaced the grill cloth and the cab was cracked pretty severely, but it sounded good. When my stepson played in High School Jazz Band I let him use it, long story short, it never made it home after graduation.

So I've had a hole in my heart for a 70s Yamaha for a bit. I've also been trying to find a small practice amp situation for my little practice area. I tried a Mustang Micro and a Spark Go, neither of which satisfied me. I decided I want a real amp.

Then I saw this G5 on Reverb for cheaper than they usually go so I snatched it up. The back panel is missing and it had scratchy pots until I took care of that problem... It sounds great, even has some overdrive when you turn up the pre-volume and a real reverb tank.

I have a question for those more familiar with this era of amps: Can I take the headphone out and use it as a direct in? My gut says no, that's an amplified signal. Am I right?

These used to be super popular with the jazz cats if I remember correctly. Exceptional warm clean sound. Love that trellis grille too.
Silly Rabbit, don't you know scooped mids are for kids?
