Orange Overdrive Head Clone Refinished PG.3

Post by HNB » Sat Sep 01, 2018 2:57 pm

I have this coming in. :) It was listed as an Orange Overdrive head copy with a built in boost circuit. I know nothing of schematics and stuff, but it looks like it is put together pretty solid. Any amp buffs able to get anything from this gut picture?

The wiring could be better but it is better than most of the sought after Fenders, it will most likely will be trouble free, If not, it will be a simple task to remedy with that neat and wide open layout. I would say you did good as long as it was cheaper than an Orange Overdrive. The heater wiring could be worth redoing, it can cause problems run against the chassis like that, but many of an amp including everyone I have built has gone that route, sometimes you need move a wire a tad to clear up a noise issue. Many would say the heater wires are also to thin, but that is largely a certain group in the Fender camp which has never bothered to do the math, it is not what Leo did, therefore it is doomed.

My only real issue with it is that the boards seem to overlap the sockets which makes work more difficult than need be.

It was almost 1/4 of the cost of an Orange Overdrive. Seller was really kind and took my best offer.

I noticed some of the Orange boards also overlapped the sockets. Hopefully since it is a newer build, it shouldn't really be an issue for awhile. The sound demos seemed good. :) Here are more pictures.

At 1/4 of the price of an Orange, I wouldn't kick it out of bed!

I'd probably take it to a good amp tech to get checked out before I fired it up for the first time, because I'm skeptical of DIY stuff that runs voltage/amperage that could kill me, but that demo sounds great to me (I'm a huge fan of Orange).

I figured the same. For hand built it is hard to beat. Going to make cool control decals for it. :)

Those knobs look like the ones from the old RCA consoles, which as far as I know have never been reproduced and have been out of production for many decades. They could probably be sold off and cover the cost of the amp and then some if they ar. At least I think it was RCA, one of the makers of consoles from the early days of broadcast.

Hopefully for me they have just gone back into production and in the entire range of sizes, I love those knobs.

I am getting this printed as vinyl transfer stickers in orange and black. I will decide what looks best in person when the amp arrives. What do you all think? I tried to make them orange like.

Those are awesome.

How about removing the faceplate, spray painting it orange, and putting black decals on that?

Or painting it black and doing the orange decals?

That could be really cool. :) Then again I would have to take all those pots and jacks off to do that.... Am I a chicken for being intimidated by that?

Oh by the way, I went with carstickers.com to do my sticker order. No affiliation or anything. I think it was like $8 a sheet and free first class shipping. You upload your own picture and they can make a transfer sticker in vinyl for you. That seemed like the best option for this project over trying to do a waterslide or something.

I like this idea! I think orange and brown-stained wood is a great look!

the box as it sits reminds me of verellen amps.

The stained wood looks great. Made me think of Costello. :)
