Has anyone here paired up a Jaguar with a JC-120 (Or any other JCs)?

Make it loud here.

Has anyone here paired up a Jaguar with a JC-120 (Or any other JCs)?

Post by aliendawg » Thu May 02, 2019 10:08 am

I am GASing hard over Roland JCs lately. But I read they can be quite bright sounding.

So how do you think a Jaguar, which can have "harsh" highs, would sound on a Roland JC? I'm guessing it would be either heavenly or just pure hell :D

Any experience?

I have not done it myself, but have heard it done in a very pleasing to my ears way. Check out Ronald Jones era Flaming Lips. He played a jag through two jc120s when I saw them a handful of times in that era. So the albums would be Trasmissions from the Satellite Heart and Clouds Taste Metallic. Any footage of them playing live during that period should have that combo, plus a gazillion effects as well...lol.

Mixing, EQ, Compression & Mastering can totally alter the original Sound.... Best to go somewhere & hear it live or, if possible, try that setup out yourself.

Bright +Bright usually equals Bright Squared..

The bass player in my band has a JC120, I've tried my Jaguar through it a few times. It's ok, kinda like a Twin Reverb with out any soul.

I borrowed a JC-40 for a bit - opinions are split on how JC-120-like it is, but I didn't find it to be a harshly bright amp. No more than an average blackface/silverface Fender, at least. It's very flat and very clean but at reasonable volumes not piercing.

I play a Marr Jag exclusively through a 120. The JC-120s eq is very responsive. In my experience I can make the tone either bright or dark

I did for a bit back in the early 90s. It can get pretty harsh.

Thank you for all the replies.

So why do so many people like this amp? Is the Chorus something that special? There's also the stereo thing...

I'm asking because I'm slowly finding out a lot of musicians I admire use (or have used) this particular amp. So it's definitely possible to make them sound great! But on paper it's nothing special...

Pretty much what you said. They are versatile. Used to be very cheap on the used market. The chorus is really special. Especially the older models. The stereo thing is the chorus. Just a good neutral pallet for anyone that likes to let their effects do the talking. Can also be used for keys in some situations and that makes them versatile as well.

I don't have a Jag, but I do have one of the very early JC-120's. (no bright switch) circa 1975.

I always roll the tone off to about 8 on my strats or the Ric, because the JC has such a linear output -and a very flat EQ compared to a mid scoopy fender twin.
There's nothing wrong with the JC-120's treble. You just need to be aware how the amp responds.

The re are always some people who are only too eager to criticize any amplifier brand without ownership experience, and others who just don't have what it takes to learn how to properly shape and tame their sound.
It's not rocket science either, so if someone tells you it's hard - it isn't. Just get your head around the fact the JC-120 EQ's has a lot more apparent range of adjustment than what most people are used to, because of it's very linear EQ response curve.

Great amp, pairs well with my twin reverb and with my vox head on a marshall 4x12

What you may find more important to you in the grand scheme of things, is whether or not you play wet/dry rigs or just one amp.
It makes a difference - knowing how you are going to use the amp.

You also gotta take into account the hype factor and the way guitarrists repeat certain configurations without really understanding it.
Jaguar > Jazzmaster :)
