school me on modern bass cabs
After demoing many newer Class D heads and being less than satisfied I finally decided to go old school and have a 1988 Gallien-Kreuger 400RB on the way.
I can continue using the Carvin 4x10 I've been borrowing more or less indefinitely, but GAS being what it is I'm thinking it would be nice to have a small cab I can keep at home. My son's been playing drums and I'm amused at the idea of jamming at home when the mood strikes. Plus my back doesn't love lugging that 4x10 to and from shows. If I could find something more compact that can keep up with an average hitting drummer and a Vibrolux and doesn't sound totally anemic and/or scooped I'd be pretty happy. I play in a 3 piece and need some midrange, dammit. 90% of the time the bass gets taken direct at a club anyway, so I don't need super deep bass as long as what's there is coherent.
One thing I've discovered pretty early in researching newer cabs is many are not actually very efficient. Watts are cheap these days and I suppose it's better to achieve the more controlled sound that folks seem to want.
I've been liking the looks and specs on Schroeder cabs so far, but I'm curious what else is out there.

To save your Back. Check out Cabs with Neo Dymium Speakers... GK & Fender are using them. I'm sure others are as well.

Re: school me on modern bass cabs
I have a couple of schroeders (1x12 & 1x15). The 1x15 sounds better alone, but the 1x12 is much smaller & cuts through better in a band mix. Something to do with a low mid bump. I use a genz benz for the two. Looks really strange when playing shows with someone using an 8x10.
I used to use an acme 2x10. very clean sounding cab, but requires a bit of power. another one i really liked was a bagend 1x15. very small, but very heavy.

One of the Bass Players I work with has a smaller version of this Fender 500 Watt with Neo Dymium Speaker. Sounds great & super light.. 36 lbs..

Nice. A compact Bag End 15” is another I want to try, but the sound would need to be worth the weight penalty.Plumerai wrote: ↑Thu Sep 26, 2019 8:43 amI have a couple of schroeders (1x12 & 1x15). I’d like to keep it to a single cab, so there willbe some compromises.

I’ve played a few of a smaller Rumble series amps and I think they sound great, but at this point I’m committed to a head/cab setup.Larsongs wrote: ↑Thu Sep 26, 2019 9:49 amOne of the Bass Players I work with has a smaller version of this Fender 500 Watt with Neo Dymium Speaker. They have Eminence Neo Dymium Speakers that sound quite good...marqueemoon wrote: ↑Thu Sep 26, 2019 11:19 amI’ve played a few of a smaller Rumble series amps and I think they sound great, but at this point I’m committed to a head/cab setup.Larsongs wrote: ↑Thu Sep 26, 2019 9:49 amOne of the Bass Players I work with has a smaller version of this Fender 500 Watt with Neo Dymium Speaker. GK makes separate Cabs with Neo Dymium Speakers... Which sound good & are very light. Not sure if Ampeg does?

They say nothing about their weight...marqueemoon wrote: ↑Sat Sep 28, 2019 7:03 amThese look cool, but they’re about twice my budget and I can’t try them first.
Aguilars Cabs are Neo but don't seem as light as some full on Neo Bass Amps... You should be able to try GK's & Ampeg's Neo Cabs pretty easy....

I think I saw some weight specs there.Larsongs wrote: ↑Sat Sep 28, 2019 7:39 amThey say nothing about their weight...marqueemoon wrote: ↑Sat Sep 28, 2019 7:03 amThese look cool, but they’re about twice my budget and I can’t try them first.

I’m concerned the Aguilar cabs might not be efficient enough. Also don’t really like the look.
My 400RB arrived yesterday. Hopefully I’ll have a chance to fire it up today.

Here is a Fender Neo Cab.. Light weight. The Eminance Speakers sound quite in my Friends.. You should be able to try these out easily..marqueemoon wrote: ↑Sat Sep 28, 2019 7:50 amI think I saw some weight specs there.Larsongs wrote: ↑Sat Sep 28, 2019 7:39 amThey say nothing about their weight...marqueemoon wrote: ↑Sat Sep 28, 2019 7:03 am
