Looking for something cheap and LOUD!

Post by aliendawg » Sat Feb 01, 2020 4:21 pm

Guys I'm looking for a gig amp and I need something loud :D

I currently own a Vox Pathfinder 15r and it sounds very nice. I've used it on gigs, mic'd and not mic'd and it was fine, except it doesn't really sound "big"

I play in a shoegaze band and the scene here is pretty nice and active. We're basically making our own events with other bands and people are showing up, thankfully.

We're trying to take it to "another level" now though. And by that I mean we're kind of trying to get the borderline deafening wall of sound thing

As a typical broke musician, I'm on budget and have no preference over solid state or tube amps. I'm just looking for something cheap but decent that sounds loud. Any recommendations?

I've looked up the fender frontman 212r (a bit overpriced here in Brazil) and people have said good things about Peavey Bandits (they're priced ok here). What are some other alternatives? Should I go 2 speaker or 1 speaker?

Teach me!

.

Find a Peavey Bandit, any model. Known for being Loud, durable, take pedals well, and cheap.
Players gig bars with these.
Use the clean channel and run your pedals into that.
Any of the 'stripe' colors, you don't need to find a 'red stripe'. They are all loud. If you need more, get two or an external cabinet and use an A/B/Y pedal.

See JM's trick for turning up the fuzz, and turning everything else down so the fuzz is the loudest.

If you have a venue with a PA, then look into getting a Joyo American Sound pedal that can act as a cab-sim direct to the PA so no amp required.

Also keep an eye out for a Fender Super Twin. Some folks dump them cheap because, well, they weigh one million pounds. But they are LOUD AZ FUGGG! Don’t look up who endorsed them, though. Better not to know.

I’d get one of those Fender Frontman 100W solid state 2x12 things. I think some have spring verb and some don’t? The one I tried had spring verb, which sounded pretty good. $200 is about the going rate here in the US.

Of course if you want a loud amp cheap it will need to be local to you. If it has to be shipped it won’t be cheap anymore.

I'd get a Peavey Deuce from the VT series. 120 watts, 2x12, tube power amp and enough volume to kill anything that gets close enough.
They can be found really cheap.
Other contenders would be a LAB L-series amp, a Peavey Century (or something in that family of amps), a Fender Super Twin, a Red Knob Fender from that era or really anything from around the 80's and solid state. Get something 2x12 for some spread and being able to take a beating from those heavy power amps.
Old loud combo's are around a dime a dozen so keep a lookout and you'll find some amazing deals on loud amps.

Nice! Good to know about those, so I'll be on the lookout for a Peavey Bandit or a Fender fm 212

They'd be my first choice but it's hard to find them under $800 here in Brazil. I'd like something priced $250 tops in the US (since it'll be around double that in Brazil)

Leftfield choice: Line 6 Flextone 212.

Everyone hates them because they are solid state and have lots of awful distortion sounds built in. But they are loud, clean, and cheap. They have a setting that is supposed to mimic a JC fairly well. If I was after a JC but didn't want to spend money, that's what I'd buy.

I second the Fender Frontman 212, it's loud as hell and you can find it pretty easily here in Brazil.

I myself have a Fender 65r for small gigs, and it's pretty loud as well! It's more than enough for anywhere I've played so far, and it's easier to carry than the 212.

That's good to know! My dad has a 25r model and it sounds very nice. He had minor problems of noise when turning some knobs into a specific position. Couldn't solve that yet.

Do you know anything about the old version of those? Same circuit and speakers just a different design?

No, mate, sorry. I think the 65r has only one version, the FM 212 I've seen a couple but have no idea what's the difference if any.

Red Knob Fender Amps. You can find them cheap and they are pretty good, don't knock unless you try it.
