NAD: JCM800 content
I saw a 2205 for a decent price & didn’t think twice. That is, until carrying it home on a 15 minute walk. Amazing how quickly you forget what a normal head weighs
Anyway, this thing sounds amazing. I was struggling with the single channel to get a clean sound that wasn’t anaemic & would work for rat & muff stacking. No such problems with its bigger brother - the pedals come alive, even on the boost channel.
Fair to say, I’ve bought a grail of an amp & I’m in love

Great score!
I also can't believe you managed to carry one of these for 15 minutes...

Re: NAD: JCM800 content
Congrats! I like this amp. The 50w is def better than the 100w IMO. It’s my favorite of all the post ‘83 Marshalls.
I got to check out a RATM rehearsal (before they came in mind you) and was shocked to hear how good Tom’s rig sounded when his tech played thru it. Peavey cabinet with celestion G12K-85 speakers. Who knew.
I was also shocked that every pedal on the board except the wah and tuner went thru the FX Loop. Long cables from board to amp. I always assumed you needed line level effects for the Loop but it works perfectly. I remember thinking to myself at that moment, why am I wasting time modding these late 70s JMP 2203s when this sounds perfect?

with someone on here recently buying a parks amp. i think the 2 of you will have to start a fugazi tribute band, ye got the amps already.
in all seriousness, early 800's are one of my favorite marshalls out there. for a single channel amp, they can do soo much.

Re: NAD: JCM800 content
Thanks Yannis, aside the utterly impracticality of using this for gigs around London I’m over the moon with it
I haven’t been to the gym for a month due to a shoulder injury. Said shoulder is unhappy again.
I’ve had the pleasure of hearing Tom Morello play his rig up close, and it does sound insanely good. When I was younger I knew about the jcm800 but not the different models. I’m a two channel guy, and when I found out he used the 50w, I’m all in.
I have a massive soft spot for a booster JMP. In fact, that’s the sound for me. It’s just not flexible enough for my current needs. Still so much love for old Marshall’s.
Fully recommend it if you come across one for a sensible price

I think I’ll have to loan you the amp for the Fugazi thing, Sean. I’m just too pop orientated to pull off anything angular with any convictions_mcsleazy wrote: ↑Sun Nov 05, 2023 12:59 pmwith someone on here recently buying a parks amp. i think the 2 of you will have to start a fugazi tribute band, ye got the amps already.

tbh, there's a reason the 800 is still loved today and i think it's because of how versatile they were. just kinda a shame the old ones are now going for stupid money now (at least where i live) there used to be a joke when i was a teenager "the reason they're called the 800 is because you can always find one for under £800" god do i wish that was still the case.

It’s happening again… I paid £700 for this one. I’m sure in a few years it’ll feel like I didn’t get a bargain. There’s deals to be done out there with redundant amps that aren’t all that rare.s_mcsleazy wrote: ↑Sun Nov 05, 2023 1:13 pmwell i already have the ian mackaye haircut (balding) so i'll give it a whirl.sal paradise wrote: ↑Sun Nov 05, 2023 1:03 pmI think I’ll have to loan you the amp for the Fugazi thing, Sean. There’s one in a shop in LA for $1900. No way I’d pay that. I’d pay £700/$875 though!

Awesome buy! I know they aren’t as popular, but The combo versions still seem to regularly go for £500-£800 in the UK. Heads seem to be a smidge more. I was gonna get one till the Park turned up.OffYourFace wrote: ↑Sun Nov 05, 2023 1:48 pmThere’s one in a shop in LA for $1900. No way I’d pay that. I’d pay £700/$875 though!
I know some people probably think 80s metal with JCM800s but pretty much every alternative / shoegaze band going played a JCM800 in the early 90s. It’s what Kevin Shields and Adam Franklin use / used.
I think they are amazing. I still see them as standard backline at a bunch of venues, probably because they always sound great.

Re: NAD: JCM800 content
JCM800 is such a great amp
I was dismissive of them for a long time because I never liked the JCM900 even a little bit. But they’re a totally different beast, maybe one of Marshall’s best ever

Great amp. I hope you have somewhere to crank it up and enjoy the sound of it working.

In my 2nd band, I'm exclusively playing a '83 2203 head into a mid 70s 1960 cab.
I've been trying half my.life to stay away from Marshalls, but geez this thing...

Re: NAD: JCM800 content
I did the same thing. I played Fender, Music Man and Ampeg for the longest time, and then I worked at a studio and mostly used Fenders, and my buddy (SteveJamsEcono) on here and I were struggling to get the sound we wanted. Then we plugged into a plexi into a 4x12 with a Les Paul and pretty much said: "OH! We were idiots." Now my main amp is a Marshall Origin 20 into a 2x12.
Anyways, I've never really cranked a JCM800, I always thought (in my head) that they were too high gain, but I could be wrong.
