Fender Amp Transformer Rusty Corrosion.

Would you be concerned if your amps transformer had this much rust and corrosion on it?

Is a sign of failure soon, as it still operates but unsure how problematic and expensive they are to fix.

This is on a 2013 model amp, so not that old.

Any suggestions, comments, info etc would be appreciated. Thanks

I’d spray a little wd40 in a dish, dip a fine paintbrush in it and give the rusted surfaces a dab. Surface rust won’t change the function of a transformer. Obviously switch off and unplug the amp first!

I’d brush off the loose rust and brush on some oil as well.

I’ve read that article that many people have referenced. Is there any actual fact or truth to it?

Is there anyone with actual repair experience? Any Luthier / amp repair technician with qualified knowledge.

Why is this so rusty, is more likely due to the previous owners storage / use / treatment of the amp?

Is it anyway normal for transformer to be in this condition?
Is it due to being made of raw iron? I’ve had conflicting opinions on leaving it, certainly not using wd40.

Anyway got similar condition transformers, and on what age of sort of amp? Thanks

WD40 will protect it. Save it from rusting anymore. You do what you feel like then.

I’d almost never recommend WD40 for anything guitar related but in this case it’s exactly what it’s designed for. Displace any leftover moisture and protect from further corrosion.

If you think about it, Mercury Magnetics is giving you advice that makes you go "Oh, I don't need to buy a new transformer, so I guess I won't increase Mercury Magnetics' profits." They'd benefit more from that article telling you your rusty transformer is boned and you need to replace it stat.

Rust on a transformer is a non issue. There's lots of old Fender amps from the 60s with rusty transformers still kicking, including a few at my house.

When it comes to rust and guitar gear, the only time rust is an issue is when it's on a guitar pickup's magnetic pole piece. The rust will eventually eat into the pickup's coil.

The coil wire is insulated. The polepieces could rust entirely away and the coil would be fine.

The rust will get the coil thru sweat and corrosion. It happens all the time. It’s very common.
