New Vox Handwired Amps

Post by Unicorn Warrior » Thu Jan 18, 2024 9:50 am

Vox is revamping their hand wired series. I’m excited to finally see a HW AC10

I wonder where they'll be built and what the pricing will be like. I have had an AC4HW for a good while now and I really like it. I'm not sure how that circuit compares to a true, vintage AC4, but it sounds great and is very much a Vox in tone. I used to have a AC30CC2 before that and it was hard to dial in an actual Vox-like sound.

Yeah, I could care less if they’re 100% accurate repro as long as they sound like a Vox and are built really well/reliable. The old voxes liked to catch on fire, right?

My HW 15 that I owned was probably my favorite amp I’ve owned looking back. I’ve wanted to get a regular AC-10, but wanted a HW option. Now, it’s finally coming. I also like the black aesthetics of these. They look great.

A few years ago I did some repair work on one of these for a guy and it sat for like a year and a half without being picked up. I had reminded him multiple times and was finally like "if it doesnt get picked up by this day, its mine". It got picked up before the deadline but I was very exited to to possibly take possession of it. My plan was to gut it and build a proper AC30 in its place. Alas.

I think they tried to make those amps do too much, so they never really did anything very well. It had some good sounds in there, but was way too tedious to try to dial in and was still never quite there. If you're buying a Vox, you probably want THAT sound. Not a do-all approximation.

They try to make most modern amps do too much. The whole Fender Hot Rod series is too much.

Amen. The best sounding amps are usually dead simple.

AC15 is listed as having GZ34 rectifier tube? Is that a typo? They all have reverb and most have effects loops so they're definitely modified circuits to some degree. Not that it's a bad thing, I'm interested to hear them.

These definitely look interesting. If they end up being solid I could see myself picking up the AC10.

It's a shame the ac10 does not have the EF86/Vibrato channel. To me that is what makes that amp.

Right....like the common usage "JMP"/"JCM" it muddies the water by using generic, often misleading terms. This is not an AC10, it is emphatically a "AC10HWR1". Apples and oranges.

Every Vox AC30HW I plugged into, I liked a lot. Don't know or care how vintage accurate they were or weren't, they still sounded good. Looks like the used prices on them are starting to come back down to earth lately too. It's the only remaining amp that I'd actually like to own that I wouldn't rather just build and I honestly prefer the Greenback loaded ones.
