Speaker recommendations

Post by Terry Wright » Mon Jan 08, 2007 8:49 am

I found an old 70s Hiwatt cab to go with my Hiwatt Lead 100 head. Unfortunatly it no longer has the Fain speakers. I'm sure I will never find any old Fains, and if I did, probably couldn't afford them. At least that what my wife would say! Do ya'll have any recommendations for a good alternative? I kind of lean toward a clean sound.

Weber makes a Fane-type speaker - https://taweber.powweb.com/weber/thames12f.htm

I have not tried them, but have liked every other Weber speaker I've ever bought (Blue Dog, Sig 10, sig 12.)

There are actually Fane reissues but one keeps reading that they're a bit muddy in the bass range and that they're a bit uninspiring when pushing clean tones (better with some breakup apparently). I have seen loads of people raving about Weber Thames speakers. You can find out about them on the Weber speaker page:

http://www.tedweber.com/

(Click "Speakers" on the left side, then click the HPT section on the left frame for a listing of options)

And the ceramic Thames frame directly:

You might want to write to Ted Weber himself about your specific needs / wants - he's very quick to reply and knows his stuff inside-out and upside-down.

Thanks for that. I've never tried Weber speakers but all the comments I've heard on them have been very positive. I just looked at that Thames speaker you suggested. Looks like exactly what I'm after. Good price too.  The Hiwatt cabs were/are 16 ohm I gather. Were they 4 ohm speakers in series or 16 ohm speakers in a series/parallel connection? Any thoughts on pros & cons about the two configurations?

I just found a good site for Hiwatt info.  mhuss.com  He shows the speaker connection there, along with other good info.

You can't go wrong with the Weber Blue Dogs, IMO.  If you go to Ted's site you can hear sound samples of quite a few of his speakers...might be a good place to start.
