Peavey Classic 50

I've been kicking around buying the 2x12 combo version of this used since every time I am in guitar center demoing a guitar I usually try to seek one of these out.  I like it because it is is pretty uncluttered and easy to get a nice clean tone out of.  I was thinking of having it around as an alternate amp in my home studio, right now I've got some Marshall, Ampeg and Orange, but nothing Fender or Vox.  What does everyone else think of this amp?

i've had both types of this amp, the 2x12 and the 4x10. today i just swapped my 2x12 to go back to the 4x10.

you cant go wrong with this amp. extremely versatile, awesome eq section, effects loop, footswitchable reverb TWEED, man, the pros just keep piling up.

they are a little heavy but oh well, most combos are.

i would recommend trying out the 4x10 and 2x12. i prefer the 10's because they are inherently more warm and punchy, and the low end never farts out like on twelves.

ive used the classic 50 for 4 years and its still going. i love this amp and i will always have one around.

I actually found a CL listing for one this weekend, the guy lived about a mile from me.  So now I am the owner of a mint Classic 50, the guy even had the original warranty card.  The amp sounds really nice, I can't wait to put some new tubes in it.  I'm also kicking around a speaker upgrade, I already have some cabs with v30s, I'm wondering how this would sound with Alnico Blues, I could also use it as a recording cab with my jtm45.

congrats! did you get the 2x12 or the 4x10 version? either way, you got a great amp there. how much did you end up paying?

I used a 70's 4x10 Peavey Classic on the track "Wishing on a Star" way under rated as far as amps go. congrats!

I picked up the 2x12, it's a really cool amp and a nice complement to what I own.  Does anyone know if Celestion Alnico Blues will be ok in this amp or if I would have to use the new alnico golds?

Well, not the 15 watt version. I've seen 30 watt versions of the celestion blue, though that will be pushed to the max in a 50 watt amp.
That's what they did with the CVR from Fender, two 25 watt speakers in a 40 watt amp. It gives good breakup for the blues, but I would up blowing one during a recording session. That could just be the quality of modern Jensens, too.
I think there are two versions though.

I've seen that the new Alnico Golds are 50W each, so in a 2x12 I could even use it with my JCM or Orange.
