NVJAD: New Vintage Japanese Amp Day.. here + guts + issues

Post by JSett » Mon Jul 19, 2010 4:14 am

Scored a little beauty on eBay last week. It's yet to arrive but I am eagerly awaiting its arrival :?

It's a Teisco 71R, all valve. I think it's gonna be about 4-5 watts but I can't find much about them online. I vaguely remember trying one in a pawn shop back in the 90's but it was a 2 speaker model, this is just the one.

Looks like this...

Nice little row of valves...

Can't wait for it to get here and I can crank it. Anyone know much about them? got one? etc etc

That thing is a beaut! I'm always tempted to get amps like this one. I've seen plenty of old japanese brand tube amps on ebay and craigslist for rather cheap but I already have an old Guya-tone(all tube, 15W) chassis project to finish...

I had to pass on a Teisco Checkmate 100 head a few months ago for $300 on the local craiglist. Sucks being broke!! Congrats on your score, hope you like it! (I know I would ;D )

A couple of things to watch; is it uk voltage, is it properly earthed, is it mains rectified (and therefore deadly)? I don't know Teisco amps but some department store amps are super dangerous and it's worth checking this isn't one of them. I only say this because the worst shock I ever got was off one of these, I woke up in hospital.

I'm probably off beam on this, hopefully Brad or someone will chip in and slap me down.

I was looking at that exact amp a few weeks ago. Was it in the US or UK? I almost bid based solely on tolex.

It is UK voltage I believe, but needs earthing. That can be easily sorted though. The plan was to take it to a tech almost straight away and get it all a-ok'd

Finally arrived today, this little beauty. Much smaller than I remembered my old ones (getting old obviously!) but still 100% awesome.

Took it apart to show you the ins and outs of it:

Check out that awesome tolex pattern!

TINY little valves! anyone ever heard of NEC 55, 56 and 58 tubes??

A few issues. Needs a ground installing so as to prevent certain death LOL, thats not much of an issue. The mains problems are though... firstly, I think the first tube is shot as it doesnt glow very bright and as the amp warms up, the sound gets really fuzzy and glitchy even on low volumes - up until that point the tone is SWEET.

Most annoyingly though, contrary to the eBay listing, the tremolo and reverb don't work :-/ all I get from the 'verb is loads of static noise/hiss (checked the tank, springs are intact). The trem is dodgy, sometimes works, most of the time it works for 1/2 a second then goes.

Im gonna take it to a tech anyways but any hints?

And yes, Im putting a claim in against the seller for the repair costs.

regarding the reverb not working. If you hit/bang the reverb tank (and make the springs vibrate) without any signal from a gtr, do you get that cccccccrrrrcckkkkkkkk sound ? If yes then the Output of the revrb is still working. If no, then it still could be the input and or the output of the reverb circuit.
relaxing alternative to doing actual work ...

the NEC are vintage Japanese tubes/valves. Better than you might think from how little you hear about them-- I actually like them quite a bit!

Your reverb and tremolo problems are probably just little stuff-- either a loose wire inside the tank or a tube, or whatever. Probably nothing a little bit of touching up by a tech wouldn't take care of.

Hello! Do you have a schematics for this amp?
I've got one, but not working. I would appreciate, if you post it here! Thank you!
