This amp did sound quite good with the caps as they were but it sounds a helluva lot better with new ones. I don't have an ESR meter but imagine a few being leaky given the bass response and loudness I got back. And now that the tubes are biased in the range I like them, the trem is down right succulent!

Thanks! She's a keeper for sure!

StevenO: I was playing this one quite a bit over the holiday weekend. Now I have the itch to try some other 10s! I might go with your suggestion and try the 10A125. Though, I really like the reconed Oxford. It sounds quite nice.

I tried a 10F150T I had laying around. It sounded a lot better than I expected, but probably isn't 'the one' for this amp. You know I'm a fan of the non "T" version. ;)

Since I already have the 10F150 in my black 6G2 I do think its appropriate to have something different in this one. Although for now, that little Oxford is amazing. I can see why so many studio guys dug these little champagne wonders! Just a nice even, flat response - which is what the 6G2 does very well.

I think you'd love the 10A125. It's really just a great match for this amp. Hard to find a bad thing to say about it. :)

You tried a Weber 10Fxxx variant, right?

Can you compare the bass response, (or overall response), in relation to your Alnico? Where does your tone knob usually sit?

Yep, tried both a 50 watt 10F150T and a 25 watt 10F150. Both sounded good, but not as sweet as I'd like. Bigger bass, very sturdy, if not stiff sound, in comparison to the 10A125, and didn't break up as much as the AlNiCo. The AlNiCo cranked sounds like fiery Marshall mixed with a Tweed Deluxe or old Silvertone. Quite honky and with lots of bite. With a Tele bridge pickup, it sounds like Green Onions. :)

I usually keep the tone knob at 7 or 8. But at loud volumes, the tone knob acts almost like a presence knob for extra bite. Very cool!

Thanks!

BTW, love the tone knob on these. They don't suck gain like the BF style, they actually add gain and presence as they're turned up, just like a tweed deluxe. They can also be turned down to tame harsh transients or too much ice pick at louder volumes...a problem I've had depending on the speakers, usually Alnico in this case.

The tone and volume knobs are dependent on one another, which is why I made such a fuss about some of the later 6G2s having 250k volume pots which are darker and slightly less gainy than 1M pots at the same settings. The taper is less abrupt on the 250k pot. There's a little less onset of volume right away.

You can almost always tell when someone has a 250k volume by looking at their tone knob. My black '64 has its tone knob cranked to get the same tone at about 6-7 on my brownie.

I just got mine back with the 1meg pot mod, when dimed the amp chugs along, and at a surprisingly bearable volume level. I am on vacation now so. Won't be near it for a month, I will be living vicariously though all the posts you guys make, lol.

What surprised me was the difference in tremolos, the 6g2 is definitely different than my princeton reverb or bronco. If I'm being perfectly honest, the PR tremolo is REALLY underwhelming compared with my other two fenders, I will probably see if I can get it modded when I get back in town to have more depth.

Finboy: Sounds like you're really digging your 6G2! I'm happy to hear it. :)

I like the trem better than in my PR. Which I modded. Search YouTube for Princeton Reverb Trem Demo...

The trem in both my Princetones are really, really good. Neither are underwhelming. Now the super choppy trem on my bigger Blackface/Silverface amps. I never use their trem.

Played through both Princetons today at practise and wow, what a sound. Jazzmaster > HotCake > SuperDuper > Princeton Reverb and 6G2 w/ VanAmps Reverb

Oh yes! Double Princeton action is always a sound to behold!

Alright, I'm gonna gloat a bit.. ;D
You gotta hear both through a vintage Memory Man in stereo..... :?
The other day I was running my PR with reverb on 6 as the dry sound and the 6G2 with a reverb unit for the delayed signal. Soooo gooood..... Even with the delay off, having both reverbs on was heavenly. Then playing some slow arpeggiated chords with both trems just slightly out,of sync. It was truly and simply hypnotic, the kind,of swirl that was going on in front of these amp.

I wouldn't say my PR's trem is bad at all. Never. It just took some work to get it perfect ime. That amp was really a work in progress for a long time.
