J Mascis' Freak Scene Amp

Post by Naturality » Sun Nov 05, 2006 7:10 am

I was just wondering if anybody new what type of amp(s) J Mascis used on Freak Scene?
and while I'm here I might as well ask if Vox AD30VT's are any good, cheers

The Bug album was rumoured to have been recorded using a 50W JCM800 head with a JCM800 4x12 cab.
I don't have much experience with the modern Vox amps........to keep it safe I would go for a JMI series AC30

I have a Korg reissue Vox AC15 which I like .. I haven't liked any of the CCs I've played.

Is the AD30VT a modeller? I don't really have any use for modelling amps so I can't comment .. if that's what you're after it might be a decent one, I dunno.

I have an effects pedal that I really like, so I can live without effects. I've found out that Grant Nicholas from Feeder uses an AC30, and I really like his sound so I might give a JMI a try hehe that rhymes, thanks for the help 8)

An educated guess: '50s tweed Fender Bandmaster and/or '68(ish) 100 watt Marshall Superlead.

I own a Vox Valvetronix AD60VT - and can't say enough good things about them. The presets are really cool, but you can get better results dialing in your own tones. It does a very authentic AC30.
Also it has a preset that nails the Freak Scene sound. I can actually get an exact Freak Scene sound with the AD60VT and a 63 Jag.

Wow, I liked the look of it because it has the sound of a valve amp, combined the the practicality of a transistor amp, apparently. I can't wait for it now...

They are great fun amps - more bedroom amps though. They can be used out, but I have heard at high volumes, although still good, they suffer slighlty.

I'm not really in a band at the moment so I won't really be using it gigs, just in my room, I'm sure it'll be better than my squier SP10 though ;D
