Namm 2018 - pedals?

Post by Zork » Sat Jan 20, 2018 11:13 am

There are so many super awesome new synths already leaked before namm this year: The Korg Prologue and Arturias new Minibrutes are very cool news and Novations new string synth based on the Streichfett looks very promising as well. I didn't hear anything near as cool from the pedal department. EHX finally made a looper that's fully syncable to external Midi clock, but with 6 or more independent loop tracks it's somehow a bit too advanced for me, so not sure on that (ok, I know, it's a pretty awesome looper...). But other than this there doesn't seem a lot more interesting to be so far - like Ibanez released another Tube Screamer which is rather boring... do I miss something? Should I just wait for namm? Or is really nothing new and interesting coming up this year?

Walrus Fathom looks cool to me. That's about the only NAMM pedal news that got my GAS sense tingling so far...

(edit: haven't heard any squawks about this one related to NAMM, but the only other one I'm eagerly anticipating is the Endangered Audio Research AD 4096 MkII)

I am launching the Reuss 'Wine and Roses' Steve Wynn signature pedal

Image

It's a dual overdrive/distortion based on the Reuss Germanium Dirt and Old Black Shoe models.

I am not officially at NAMM, but I'm there 8)

Empress has began a curriculum that will be pushed out to universities in order to achieve the proper degree to operate it

yeah some people complain when a pedal has more than four knobs, this would be like kryptonite to them :P

Zoia looks awesome! I don't know if I'd want to mess with it on my board for guitar or bass, but I bet it would be PERFECT if it was your only effect for something like a synth...

I mean I thinks it's awesome and would love to have one. But I already have anxiety about my too many knob pedal board situation

That new EHX looper is bonkers. I don't want one, bit still...

It's certainly not a device to replace a bunch of tubescreamers of old school rock guitarists... :D
No seriously, the way it looks to me it's much more intuitive than some other multieffects with pages and pages of submenues and reminds me much more of the workflow of devices like novation launchpad, ableton push or native instruments maschine. Empress most likely aims at musicians who already are used to grid based devices and it's really not that complicated to get into it. I think it's pretty genius to put that principle in a pedal format.

My biggest question about the Zola is why it's a pedal. Why do I want this and not a synth with a keyboard or a MIDI controller? The video I watched didn't show a guitar at all and devoted maybe 5 seconds to explaining how you can "put a phaser and a reverb and a looper together." Ok.

I would much rather have a keyboard for making the types of sounds they showed off in the video vs. getting down on my knees to poke at some tiny buttons on a pedal-sized box. I'm not hating on it, I actually think it looks interesting, I just want to know what the appeal is supposed to be for guitarists.

That's cool and all, but hardly the groundbreaking achievement that is NINE Tubescreamers in one pedal.
