Help me with fuzz pedal

Post by SadFuzz » Sun Dec 31, 2017 1:41 am

Anybody got any ideas for this?
I'm looking for something with either just volume and gain or a full eq.
Nothing too extreme with low noise and a good handle of low gain tones as well.
I'm ok with boutique or stock stuff but my budget doesn't allow for overly expensive pedals. Something within £50-£170

Any help appreciated!

I have a Frederic effec Unpleasant Companion since a long time now and love it.
He is now doing a Deeply Unpleasant companion for 100£ and some other fuzz pedals.
Those are made in UK.

I'm curious. There are actually two different versions of the Companion Fuzz/Shin-Ei 2; the standard Silicon transistor one and a really rare early version that sounded different, used Germanium transistors and was known for being really, really loud. Which one does the Fredric clone?

I was thinking of either a Devi Ever Hyperion or Goddess Zero or a Carl Martin The Fuzz as it has a full eq spectrum.

Just some thoughts.

-A simple GE Fuzz Face type pedal will give you a full range of sound and much of the EQ will actually be controlled by your attack and your guitars' tone and volume pots. A Z'Vex Fuzz Factory will give you all the bells and whistles.

-An EHX GE4 Big Muff will give you a two channel overdrive/distortion/fuzz that sounds nothing like a standard Big Muff and has precise controls, including voltage starve options.

-Looking at the Fredric site has not given me any indication of what Companion Fuzz is being cloned, but their Super Unpleasant Companion will give you the Shin-Ei 2 Companion Fuzz as well as the Shin-Ei 6/Univox Super-Fuzz in the same unit. You'll have a classic fuzz effect along with a double octave fuzz with a scoop option that's pretty much the drive pedal equivalent of a nuclear missile.

I'd start looking at earthquaker hoof or spires. I also have liked the carcosa. Based on what you're saying, I would suggest something with a few more knobs for tweaking. I enjoy devi's pedals, but they literally have one tone knob. Also, the hyperion is basically just a big muff - it's not super special or anything.

I think that if you're looking for low gain tones on a fuzz pedal, you're going to need more eq options than what devi's pedals will give you. If you're looking at her stuff though, you might look at the GZ, 90, or karaoke party. I've owned those and they're a bit less "intense" than her more out there models. Keep in mind that the GZ is an octave pedal, so make sure you're in the market for that.

I also recently picked this up: https://reverb.com/item/6165076-boom-bo ... tape-clone

It's a copy of the stupidly expensive midfi "demo tape" that inexplicably costs like $250. It's probably one of the more "usable" less intense fuzzes I've played. Source audio kingmaker might also be another option (if you don't mind digital fuzz/distortion). I have the soundbox which is solid for its versatility as I think this is the same thing in a better enclosure (not plastic crap).

It seems like you're looking for a more silicon type of sound, which any of the above posts is a solid example.

I wouldn't use a Devi Ever pedal if someone paid me to.

Yeah I really only find her stuff usable for noise and some leads. I just have better sounding stuff for riffs. I think if youre looking for kind of weird fuzz pedals these days im more inclined to look at malekko or dba.

I've played a few different types of popular circuits (fuzz face, muff, and a couple weird variants and hybrids), and after getting my Magnetic Effects White Atom, I'd highly recommend getting a fuzz pedal that is unique and doesn't necessarily sound like anything in particular. It can do overdrive as well as fuzz, and sounds great on both. I found out about it from JustNick, and his demo is still a favorite of mine to watch ;D

Or literally anyone but that ridiculous attention whore. She's gotta be one of the most annoying people ever and she used to(maybe she still does this)just leave boards floating around in enclosures wrapped in electrical tape. What the Hell???

If you want to find some really interesting fuzzes at great prices check IdiotBox Effects out. He makes a bunch of unique fuzzes and couple of tweaked clones. http://www.idiotboxeffects.com/products I have a Blasteroid(discontinued but available on Pymaxe still), Lazer Fuzz, and a Blower Box. All great, all very different and unique.

Another company worth a look for more out there stuff is Pickletech. I just a got a Mega-Berkatron and it's amazing. Thick, gated, splattery at times, heavy fuzz with a lot of fun bells and whistles like an oscillator and a button that makes lazer noises. Very fun and a lot of great sounds outside of the crazy ones. Octave down, and up, PWM sounds. All in there with the oscillator and various switches. Very sensitive to volume and tone knobs on your instrument. https://www.etsy.com/ca/listing/2497648 ... e_active_3

Thanks for the info on idiotbox. There has been a lot of used stuff at GC around here turning up and I really didnt know anything about the company. I'll try to check them out.

No problem. IdiotBox is one of my favorite companies. Some of the stuff is a bit out there but I prefer that kind of thing most of the time. He makes a quite a few fuzzes that I'd like to own some day. I'd like to have most of his pedals to be honest. They're well made, boutique pedals at pretty much Moore, JOYJO, or Donner Prince or whatever prices. He sometimes has sales where everything is 99 USD or less. That's crazy. I think his most expensive pedal is 150 bucks, maybe even 140. I can't remember. All of his stuff is pretty bass friendly too.

Dwarfcraft, eqd, and dba are all solid choices. I use an op amp muff clone, but it's not for everyone.
What is acoustic? Oh, you means a grandpa's guitars? A grandpa's guitars? That's for pussies and grandpas. I think you know it.
