+1 for the tone wicker. Because of it you can dial the muff darker than normal and still have some sizzle. Really like it.

Re: Which Muff?
The Germanium 4 doesn't sound like the typical Muff because of the twin channels and germanium transistors as opposed to silicon. On the overdrive side, it does the low gain Distortion+ thing well. When blended with the distortion channel, the dirt goes beyond any other Muff I've played and begins to approach Foxx and Shin-Ei territory.

Op-amp and an octave down pedal. There is nothing in the world that can stop it.

Re: Which Muff?
I picked up a used deluxe big muff last weekend for $90 and it was worth every penny. Crazy versatile, and the mid circuit is a game-changer for me as the lead guitarist in a rock band playing Jag and scooped Vibrolux. It helps me pop right up when I need to, and fall back out when I'm ready (which is never, let's be honest).

Re: Which Muff?
Awesome suggestions!
The tone wicker muff sounds pretty good from the clips Iv heard. There is also a 70s muff (op amp im assuming) second hand in my area, but they want $400au for it, which I dont think Im prepared to pay.

Re: Which Muff?
I also have a Deluxe Big Muff.... I've had a lot of muff over the years but this is the best of the bunch IMO a tweakble..... mids etc......Mike S wrote: ↑Sun Jun 10, 2018 4:50 pmI sold my Muffaletta for a Deluxe Big Muff after learning about the additional versatility and some of the issues with JHS...
The Deluxe will let you dial in most of EHX and Sovtek Muffs and will let you plug in an Expression Pedal for a fuzz-wah effect. It can't do the Op Amp Muffs very well and doesn't have a tone bypass switch, but does cut through because of the mids controls. It also obviously can't do the Ge4 Big Muff, which is one of my faves. It can do the Triangle, the regular and Violet Ram's Head and the Civil War, so what more do you need?
If you want something even thicker and more brutal, go for the Fredric Super Unpleasant Companion in the Super Fuzz Tone 2 mode.
Check the kitrae big muff page for advice on settings to achieve classic muff variants.

Which octave down pedal do you prefer?

Re: Which Muff?
I reckon any of them will work. I've got the cheapo Danelectro Mini "Chili Dog," that has one and two octaves down.

What’s your budget? For budget, EHX is okay, but I find their stuff meh. For the good stuff, try Stomp Under Foot. They got a lot of variants.

Re: Which Muff?
The deluxe sounds like a good choice, but its a little pricey I think. Id rather keep the costs down a bit so I can get a few things with my tax return. Im still leaning towards the green russian reissue.
I tried the bass muff at my local music store today (they apparently have another - Im assuming a little big muff or maybe a nano - on order too), and was unfortunately rather underwhelmed. I tried it on a boss katana amp with a squier duo-sonic (which is a nice guitar by the way), which was the closest thing they had to a jaguar/jazzmaster with single coils like I usually play. I found it very muffled and muddy sounding, and it had no grunt whatsoever.
How close is it soundwise to the russian? If its too much alike then Id probably not like the russian either. In which case Id probably go full circle back in the direction of the op amp. or maybe even go in a completely different direction and get a rat or something instead.

I've heard they've wanted to do it for a while, so there's a good to fair chance that EHX is going to put out nano versions of the Triangle and Civil War Big Muffs within the next year. Those are probably the ones you want. It's not really a "Big Muff", but you may want to try the Double Muff in Double mode as well.

Re: Which Muff?
I've always played the standard big box NYC Big Muff, and it's my favorite pedal even to this day, I've had it since the early 2000's.
I'm not sure why but seems like people usually dismiss it... you always see people talking about russian, green, black, triangle, ram's head and all this stuff, but the standard NYC is pretty good, it deserves more love definitely.

Re: Which Muff?
the first nyc reissue post-sovtek is regarded pretty well (with the dakaware style pointers that have the white line), it's the ones with hockey puck knobs that sound lame ime. but then i'd prefer a sovtek/fuzz war over any nyc/ramhead /op amp muff

Re: Which Muff?
Ok a bit of an update.
I think Iv settled on a green russian - after hearing a few more demos I think it will probably be closest to the sound Im after. Second choice is probably the tone wicker. Now I just need to do my tax and wait for my return
I ended up getting a practically new hot tubes overdrive for a good price too, and so far Im liking it. When it first arrived I tried it at low volume with my TVL Jazzmaster and was a little iffy about it, but Iv since played it for a while a bit louder with my Squier VM Jaguar, and it sounded pretty good.
As a side note its a little disappointing - I keep going back to the squier over the TVL jazz, which cost 3-4x as much. I love the jazzmaster, but something keeps bringing me back to the jag. Im thinking 90% of that reason is the setup though - I live in a tropical climate, so I really need to adjust the setup on my guitars several times a year, and with the heel adjusting truss rod its a massive pain in the ass. Also I never quite got it right in the first place - from the factory the jazz came with really light strings, where I play either EB not even slinkys, or my new favourites NYXL 12-60s.
The thing with the hot tubes I find a bit weird is the gain. You can turn it up 98% and its still a medium gain, warm, but gritty overdrive, then those extra 3mm it suddenly becomes a sputtering full-on distortion sound. Its cool though, and it seems to suit my style.

I don't know if the OP is still looking, but I love, LOVE my Stomp Under Foot '76 Amherst Fuzz. It NAILS that Smashing Pumpkins, Dinosaur Jr., etc. sound/tone.
