Three favorites in order:
- Ram’s Head. It just has ‘that’ sound. It’s warm, full, and pregnant with gain.
• Black & Yellow Russian Big Muff modified by Sustain Punch. This is the one before he put out his own Creamy Dreamer (that I also own). It’s a different sound: Bassier, more round and more mids.
• Classic NYC OP-AMP Big Muff V5. More gain and more mor aggressive. The Corgan Muff. Aggressive as can be.
• Runner up is my V3003 Little Big Muff Pi. It is a 3003 PCB that is not fully populated and is jammed into a smaller enclosure. The one that I have is particularly aggressive. I’m selling it though as I’ve got 8 versions of Muffs. I kinda went nuts back in the 80’s and 90’s.

The black Russian, it was my first and it is the one I know best.

Re: Poll: What's your fav EHX Big Muff model/version?
I voted OP Amp. Mine has '77 pots and on/off switch. I went looking for a Muff after hearing a couple of guitarists using them at shows back in the day. The OP amp was the first one I found at $50 because it needed some work, as in it didn't.
After I got it working I found a shop while on tour that had the brand new green Russian Muffs and 3 vintage Muffs. I did a little shootout and decided mine was the best. For me at least. I wanted loud and aggressive and not creamy sustain, and it was much louder and more aggressive vs the others, but I could dial it back and have it in the ballpark of the tones they put out.
At the time I knew mine had OP amps, and Tube Screamers had OP amps, and Rats had OP amps, so except for being louder and more aggressive I thought all Muffs were basically the same. Transistors were for Fuzz Faces and I didn't know at the time that the other Muffs had transistors too. One was early 80s and one was a Ram's Head, don't remember what the 3rd was.
Now that I know better I still haven't been down the Muff rabbit hole, my old one works just fine.

I have a black Russian and I'm using it all the time. It's just impossible to make anything sound bad with it. I once played a green one of the Sovteks and that was an absolutely mindblowing experience - but that was probably because besides the Big Muff were two SVT stacks and a vintage Rickenbacker 4003 involved. And a lot of alcohol. And other stuff as well. I have read that the black and green Russians are technically the same so I don't feel the urge to buy a green one but one day or another I will because of that night some years ago and because they look fucking cool.
However, in my band setup where I do a lot of electronica inspired stuff on bass I'm using a Deluxe Big Muff because of the awesome gate, the bass boost and the second tone option in the seperated mids section. I also had a Little Big Muff some time ago and remember it as thick and fat and very present in the mix. Might get one of these again - even though it's not cool or hasn't got any mojo at all.

i went for the black russian..... despite the fact i never want to repair another one again. i got a broken one from arri's brother. i already knew what the issue was going to be.... fucking devils spaghetti and broken switch. i've repaired 2 or 3 over the years. my friend says in her experence, i have the best one she's ever tried.... and i've not even finished fixing it. it needs new pots and im gonna give it some nice yellow knobs from bitcheslovemyswitches (or is it just "lovemyswitches" now?) but after that, i never want to repair another black russian again.
my modded nyc is a very close second. it has matched darlington transistors and a modded tone stack. it's way better on bass though.

I've had a black Russian muff forever, but I got the op amp reissue and love it more.

My Black Russian sounds like no other version I've tried, but the volume pot's a bit knackered these days (still sweeps, but rotates freely all the way round). I tried to build a clone of it, but it's not quite the same level of utter filth.

Yup - used to have a green Russian Small Stone, where the rate pot just fell to bits. For something that literally looked like it fell off a tank, the build quality was really poor.

Tone Wicker FTW.
I’ve had green Russian, original op-amp and the NYC muff, and the wicker is my favourite. I still have to try the new op-amp, it with the tone bypassed may be my winner.

Another vote for Tone Wicker. So many good sounds and cheap as chips.

I'm really enjoying the new Deluxe Big Muff, my 2nd choice would be black Russian.... I've owned 3 over the years.
