Octave Fuzz recommendations?

Post by Zork » Sun Mar 15, 2020 10:03 am

I keep going back and forth between my Ibanez Standard 59 Fuzz (very similar to the Super-Fuzz) amd my Foxx Tone Machine clone.
I like the aggressive Midrange and the thick fuzz of the Ibanez but the octave is at times a bit too chaotic and I'd like to be able to switch it off. The Tone Machine has a switch for the octave but the octave is a little too loud and the pedal could have a more pronounced mid range.

So I'm looking for an octave fuzz with switchable octave, lots of gain and a midrange that really cuts through. The Fulltone Ultimate Octave seems to be a Tone Machine with more mids, but apparently has less gain. I also found a "Blue Collander Doppel Fuzz" on reverb which seems to tick all the boxes: Switchable and blendable octave, lots of gain and a tweaked big muff tonestack: https://youtu.be/mK3XRS6mzPw
What else should I look into? The MXR Sub Machine and the Octave Bass Fuzz are tempting but the one seems to be a straight up Tone Machine while the other is a Super-Fuzz, both of course with an octave down, but still...

I have a Joyo Voodoo Octave which is pretty good, I think there's a simple mod that can turn it into a proper Ultimate Octave too. It's footswitchable and has a switch for the mids to go from scooped big muffy tones to more squelchy mid heavy.

You could try getting a hold of a Way Huge Piercing Moose...it is a FOXX clone as well...I have one and it sounds pretty great.

Strong prominent octave and a good tone shift on the knob :)

I’ve got an Orange Fur Coat that I like a lot.
Could perhaps be an option for you?

Thank you guys. I got the orange fur coat. The graphic is a bit silly for my taste but the sounds are awesome from what I've heard. It seems to adress all the issues I have with my Tone Machine but to preserve everything I like about it. I hope it really holds up to my high hopes when it shows up in the mail.

Take care! :)

MJM Roctavios. Amazing Octavia clone and fairly cheap too. The only pedal I've kept over the last 10 years.

The Line6 M5 has a good octave fuzz and a suboctave fuzz.

Really? I got 2 M9s but never really used the drive section. I'll check it out.

I've found the sub octave fuzz very good for bass lines.

Let us know how you like the orange!

I have a Catalinbread Octapussy which sounds fantastic, but sometimes I wish I could switch the Octave off. The Orange is available at my local shop, but I won't be able to try it anytime soon, since all shops are now closed in the country for several weeks probably. I think they're still shipping though.

I pretty much stick with my Danelectro French Toast. It's Foxx, and I love 'em.

I haven’t ever tried any of those pedals.

But I would have loved to be in the room with them when they were apparently getting high af and coming up with the names for that Danelectro pedal series.

As long as they were passing their muse.

I know, right?!?!

I actually made a whole pedalboard out of them and it's pretty good.

I’ve been using the EQD Hoof/Reaper for years. The Muff side has a controllable mid shift and the Reaper side hasn’t ever felt lacking. The octave is switchable too.
