What quintessential effects have you owned?

Post by fuzzjunkie » Wed Apr 15, 2020 1:31 pm

What effects have you owned that is a classic representation of the category? (Examples)

Fuzz - (Fuzz Face, Tonebender, Big Muff, FZ-1, Superfuzz) Tonebender and Big Muff, not sure Roland BeeBaa counts
Distortion - (Rat, Distortion +) Rat and DS-1
Overdrive - (Tube Screamer, Klon) only boutique ODs and a TS-9 clone
Phaser - (Small Stone, Phase 90) none
Flanger - (Electric Mistress, BF-2) I have an A/DA, but it was boutique in its day
Chorus - ( CE-1, etc) none
Vibrato - none, just Vox amp
Univibe - I have a Voodoo Vibe, but that’s really in it’s own category
Ring Modulation - Lovetone Ring Stinger, but own category again, not a Mooger Fooger or Frequency Analyzer
Tremolo - Boss TR-2
Octave - none, no Mu-Tron or Octavia here
Pitch shift - (Whammy, PS-3, Eventide) none
Analog Delay - (Memory man, Boss DM-2, Ibanez AD-9) Deluxe Memory Man
Tape Echo - (Space Echo, Echoplex, Echorec) Space Echo
Digital Delay - (2290, SPX-90, SDE-3000, PCM-41, DD-3) none of the classics
Spring Reveb - only in the Space Echo or an amp
Digital Reverb - (RV-3, REV-5, Quadraverb, PCM-70) Boss RV-2
Synth/Filters (Microsynth, POG, Mu-tron, Moog) nothing classic
Compressor- none

I've never owned any of the name brand classics (RAT, Tubescreamer, etc.), but I've had plenty of clones of the classics. To be honest, I prefer clones just to see what pedal designers can do with getting more cool sounds out of classic circuits. These are about as close as I've gotten to the "real" thing.

Fuzz - (Fuzz Face) Analogman Sunface BC-109, (Big Muff) Vick Audio Triangle
Ring Modulation - EHX Ring Thing
Tremolo - Boss TR-2
Digital Delay - Boss DD-3
Synth/Filters - POG2

I've bought and sold many a pedal since the late 90's, so I will try my best!

Fuzz - Many Big Muffs, but I had a Green Russian and a USA reissue [sold]. Currently I'm down to 4 clones. The Green Russian sounded amazing, but was one of the most poorly built pedals I've ever owned. Zxex Fuzz Factory, Zxex Fuzzalo [sold], Devi Ever Rocket [sold].
Distortion - BOSS DS-1 [sold], Proco RAT [sold].
Overdrive - Klon clone. Demeter Uberdriveulator [sold]. TC Mojomojo [sold]. EH Crayon.
Phaser - EH Small Stone [sold], MXR Phase 90 [sold], MXR Phase 100 [sold], Mutron Phaser II [sold].
Flanger - EH Electric Mistress, an early 80's model. Sounded great, noisy as hell [sold]. RAK flanger [sold].
Chorus - none.
Vibrato - none.
Univibe - none.
Ring Modulation - none.
Tremolo - North Effects Repeater tremolo [sold].
Octave - Eh Octave Multiplexor [sold].
Pitch shift - I've been through 3 Digitech Whammy 3 pedals. Love the sound, but they've all broken. Currently I have a Digitech Ricochet as a stop gap.
Analog Delay - Late 70's EH Memory Man, which I still have. Sounds great, but I don't gig it. I've had a couple of cheap Akai delays, which had a really interesting tone.
Tape Echo - I've got a WEM copicat that I use for recording.
Digital Delay - Diamond Quantum Leap, which is a mainstay, it's an excellent pedal. TC Flashback mini [sold]. BOSS DD-6 [sold].
Spring Reveb - none.
Digital Reverb - Diditech Digiverb [sold], Keeley Aurora Reverb, Caroline Meteore. TC Trinity Reverb.
Synth/Filters (Microsynth, POG, Mu-tron, Moog) I had an early 2000s EH Microsynth, which broke. I have a Sonuus Wahoo, which is great, but I use it mostly for wah. I've had an EH Doctor Q and a Dunlop Wah.
Compressor- Trusty BOSS CS-2. MXR Dynacomp.

I sold lots of my pedals to pay for chemotherapy for my cat. Worth it as he's still hanging around as happy as ever. :)

Small box 80’s Rat (still own)
Big box LM308 90’s reissue Rat (still own)
Boss PN-2 (still own. Bought it brand new at a closeout price)
Boss DC-2 (sold. Honestly I didn’t care for it and decided to cash out)
Demeter Tremulator (still own and run on my main board)
90’s DMM reissue (bought brand new and returned because it crapped out after one practice.)
I’m not sure if the Maxon AD80 in my avatar counts, but I love it and it’s been my main delay for decades. It’s dark, but just sits in the perfect place. It’s quiet and doesn’t have the annoying “chirp” of some analog delays.

I think the other only vintage effect I’d consider buying at this point is a DC-2. I consider the Klon another “nothing like the real thing” effect. If I were rich I’d probably suck it up and buy one, but I’m not.

Oh, and I owned a reissue MXR Blue Box for a minute. Did not care for it and sold it.

Most of them over the years, it appears. Goes to show that many are "classics" or at least the standard for a reason. Everyone should try out the greatest hits at some point.

What I'd consider as classics / any of them would be enjoyable if it were the only ones I had in each category.

Delay: AD80, DM2, big box DMM, Roland RE-201, Korg SDD3000 (pedal), SDD2000 (rack), various digitech weirdness, Univox tape, DD2
Reverb: RV-2, H9 (space), Fender RI tank, various yamaha racks
Chorus: Ibanez CS9, Boss CE2, Boss CE2w (so CE-1 sort of)
Flanger: MXR, BF2
Florus: Boss DC2
OD/Fuzz: 90s Rat, Green big muff, MXR D+

many have been sold, some are still around, some are on my active board.
I had the Ibanez UE racks as my main effects for years (all are the x0x series analog effects, all quintessential, I'd argue), recently went to a pedalboard set up and have had my mind blown/expanded by the Boss DC2 into stereo delays and reverbs. I liked it okay in mono, but don't think I'll ever be able to back.

Considering the new DC2w because it has stereo inputs, rather than just mono > stereo.

I had the same experience. A friend just started playing electric guitar and she's been buying pedals. As history always repeats itself, she bought a blue box (as her 4th or 5th effect) and was baffled, so loaned it to me. I still have no use for it. We can all thank Rowland S Howard for our bad choices, right?

I wasn’t as ready to embrace chaos at that point in my guitar playing as I am currently, but I doubt I’d like it much better now.

Blue Box [I keep it because it was a gift, but I don't use it anymore]
Boss DS-1 (w/ Keeley mod)
Electric Mistress (sold)
Phase 90
Small Clone
TS808

Not sure these classify as quintessential:
Boss CE-5 Chorus Ensemble [sold]
Boss CS-3 Compression/Sustainer (never really liked it though) [sold]
Boss OD-3 (actually not a bad overdrive at all) [sold]
MXR Micro Amp

I would say the Micro Amp is. Along with the LPB-1. Early boosts trying to get away from the Rangemaster sound.

I bought Fromel’s Seraph Deluxe, based on the Roland rackmount SDD-320 Dimension D, with vibrato and ZT-flange as an added bonus, stereo in & out. Great pedal.

Then I bought the DC-2w, and while it doesn’t do the vibrato or flange, I think it’s a really great pedal for what it is. You can use it oldschool like a regular DC-2, or switch it to SDD-320 mode and use it in stereo as a Dimension D.

If you like the DC-2, I don’t think that you would regret getting the waza at all.

It's a boost booster, to boost your boost - it makes your tone much muchier.

I’m not big on effects, especially quintessential ones. If I have an effect, it’s because it does something weird (Blue Box, some extreme fuzzes etc.) I’m not big on using subtle modulation/delay/reverb etc. , I almost hate flange/phaser, and if I want dirt I’m happy with the distortion channel/drive from my amps in general.

That said, I own a Big Muff (Little,) DS1 and Dunlop GCB-1 .
King Buzzo: I love when people come up to me and say “Your guitar sound was better on Stoner Witch, when you used a Les Paul. “...I used a Fender Mustang reissue on that, dumbass!

Cool. Great to know. I won’t reveal my top secret setting for the DC-2 (hint it’s one of four options) but it just seems to give everything some magical space and, uh, dimension to guitars in stereo.
