Sturgill Simpson - The Promise

I accidentally came across this today and didn't even recognize it as a cover of When In Rome's song at first. What kept me listening was the smoky, Memphis-era Elvis production and understated arrangement. Apparently Simpson is being touted as the guy who could save country music from the shitty contemporary pop bile its grown into over the last few decades. Based on this recording, I'm planning on checking him out.

I love a lot of the old country music I grew up on in the '70s, but I can't stand 'modern country'; as if the genre itself weren't enough to turn my stomach, it's being heavily consumed by white conservatives who pine for the mysterious 'Golden Age of America' (read: when Minorities, Women, and Homosexuals knew their place!).

Whoa, sorry! I don't know where all that came from. :-[

I came across an interesting article that calls him the Radiohead of country... Seems I'm not alone in my early impressions.

Shitty quality, but this confirms my initial feelings about him. He reminds me a little of '70s Waylon Jennings.

The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

Julia Holter - Don't Make Me Over deliciously sumptuous, lush and woozily romantic Dionne Warwick/Bacharach and David Cover on seven inch.

Dionne Warwick - Don't Make Me Over

NOT a cover ofGoodbye Johnny off Fire of Love, it's an all new song built round Jeffrey Lee Pierce Lyrics from a demo of another song called Goodbye Johnny.

Primal Scream - Goodbye Johnny (Andrew Weatherall's Nyabinghi Noir Mix) the original coveris 'no bad' but the sleepy and sleazy digidub remix is where the cool kids hang out! :D

Anna Calvi - Papi Pacify (FKA twigs cover) full marks for actually having a bash at something interesting and not something done a million times.

FKA Twigs - Papi Pacify IMO and all that one of the few artists around who could actually make sonically interesting music and shift a few units.

Anna Calvi (with David Byrne) - I'm The Man who Will find you

Connan Mockasin - I'm the Man who will find you

originals are best but the covers are decent but the Suicide cover on the same 12' suxxx and I knew this before I even played it.

I think that a lot of people will find this to be shit, but I like this cover of Chirpy Chirpy Cheep Cheep by Middle Of The Road

And this version by Cambodian legend Ros Sereysothea.

Original.

Princes Hill Secondary College Vocal Group - The Be Colony Glee not Gloop, far preferable to ironic Britney run through.

Broadcast & The Focus - The Be Colony

Bardo Pond - Here Come the Warm Jets (Brian Eno cover) I've shamefully had this since RSD and not played it, though I didn't actually pay for it either (was thrown in as a sweetener). Anyhow...perfect soundtrack for blasting between moons...

I think that this is a brilliant cover. Totally removed the cheesiness of the original. SS has been my go to jam lately.
film/music composition major
somewhere between J. Mascis and Joe Pass

First Aid Kit - When I Grow Up B-side of Ghost Town 7'.

The originalFever Ray song is bloody amazingbut this is cute as a Squirrel kit and I steal the treatment 100% when I want to amuse and embarrass the young Shadowplays with my mad folk skills.

Though if I want to do the hustle I always do it to the Lissvik remix.

Daryl's House will have some gems. Maybe not a strict cover, but worth sharing.
