I'm curious how many people with still be enjoying it when it's available to buy. I'd love to have a look at the the free LQDL versus paid physical and HQDL purchases figure.StevenO wrote:I'm still waiting for this album to feel enjoyable to me.

I downloaded it for free and I, like many others I have talked to, am still buying a copy. I think the choice they made to make it free and a surprise was really cool of them.

I have no problem buying music, however I didn't download this album, I've just been listening to the YouTube version and I watched the live performance of it. I'm waiting to hear the hook in these songs, but they're not sticking. I loved the Tweedy and son album, for the most part, and right off the bat. This, not so much, unfortunately.

There's a live version of Star Wars out there? Link? Please?StevenO wrote:I have no problem buying music, however I didn't download this album, I've just been listening to the YouTube version and I watched the live performance of it. The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

Re: Wilco - "Star Wars"
Gave a quick listen to the live performance.
Disappointing as not hearing much if anything 'experimental' here Just more of the same rhythmically rigid/straight/bland MOR rock with minimal-to-no discernible vocal melody with occasional noise freakouts from Nels, but even those seem watered-down. Agree with StevenO, not hearing a 'hook' anywhere.
I actually found the drum solo around 25 mins to be the highlight, which is surely cause for concern!

Perceptive. I think you often see this phenomenon with bands with a high level of fan obsession, like Radiohead or U2. Or as you hinted folk wanting to like bands that play the same guitar as them. I guess I might wearing the same blinkers in other circumstances.andy_tchp wrote:

I called the UN, they'd not received a drum solo warning call since 1976 but assured me it would be before the security council and we'll get a resolution on the matter ASAP.andy_tchp wrote: I actually found the drum solo around 25 mins to be the highlight, which is surely cause for concern!

Glad to see all the Sky Blue Sky love on here. I thought I was the only one.
Anyway, Star Wars is the album I've been wanting them to make, so I'm ecstatic!

Re: Wilco - "Star Wars"
After finally giving the full album a proper listen, I think there are some really cool and unique sounds on there, but their songwriting still does nothing for me.
And music is far from the only part of life where this happens- in fact it's pretty much true of anything we have any kind of personal choice over, and it's a little naive for anyone to think they're immune to it in all instances.
I think it comes down to a feeling of alienation from your peers understanding something that you don't. Of course, usually it's nothing to do with mental capacity and everything to do with personal taste, but that's rarely how it's presented and you have to have a certain level of self-asuredness to be able to see past that.shadowplay wrote:Perceptive. The Gold Top Les Paul Nels Cline played at the Pitchfork festival (where Wilco played the whole Star Wars album) was once owned by Duane Allman. Thats pretty cool!! The Allman museam lend it to him.

Re: Wilco - "Star Wars"
^^ Thanks!
Having listened to this album for a while now, I think it is the best thing the band has done in a long time.
