My comment was on the disappointing lack of progression..nothing to do with the quality of the music contained within the list...it’s the same fucking list since 1985..a lot has happened since then, though you wouldn’t know it.
That is a more interesting observation, and I agree. But wasn't the mid 80s also the beginning of the CD era? For popular music, and really, this is about popular music, I suspect the next couple of decades 1985-2005-- maybe even through 2015-- you're not going to see as much vinyl produced or available.

I'm sure Reverb has the data to tell us the top selling vinyl albums and what year they came out post 1985. We should get one of their data-crunchers on it. It would be some of our resident record hound's other favorites, like Nirvana, Pearl Jam, Rage Against The Machine, and YOU GOTTA HAVE THE SMASHING PUMPKINS. Oasis never made much of a dent in the US.

Nooow we're getting to something interesting. Yes, I agree, there would have been a time where vinyl production would have dropped significantly, if not entirely. Although there was good music being made during the CD years, finding it on vinyl could become nearly impossible. I've been trying to find certain albums from about the mid-90s to mid-00s, and haven't been able to track them down yet -- or if I did, they cost a fortune. I'm hoping there will be a big push to re-release them in the format soon.
The cool thing about fretless is you can hit a note...and then renegotiate.

Well you certainly classed the place up with that nonspecific passive aggressive diss, so thanks.

Doesn’t surprise me one bit.

Most everyone I know getting into vinyl tends to be buying seminal albums (for them) on vinyl and using streaming services for consuming new music.

As far as those I know buying new records, there’s at least a dozen good record stores I can go into around my area to buy more or less whatever I want. And most bands releasing new records will come through on tour, so you can buy them cheaper at the show.

But if I wanted to find a used copy of something like “The Wall” at a reasonable price (if at all) that would prove exceedingly difficult and time consuming to do locally, and would rely on a fair amount of timing and luck. I could buy that if Reverb LP all day.

I also know a few collectors that re-buy stuff online frequently. Always trying to find an original print or such. I’ve never understood that mentality though. But I’m not a collector

Also, a lot of conclusion jumping and snark on this thread.

I know folks that like to sit around and listen old favourite’s on vinyl. They have a vinyl and scotch night once a month and do this. They also go to a ton of shows in the local scene and turn me onto a lot of new music.

Why some people assume this is a mutally exclusive game is beyond me.

I hope that, in a decade, the used vinyl top 20 chart will consist in large part of music released within that decade. That would be heartening to see.
This is an excellent rectangle

Well you said your pals are mostly buying old records and streaming new music which seems a pretty clear division and tangentially bears out that dull as dishwater list.

With my cadres and myself (and my partner and children) we've always bought new records and since we never stopped buying vinyl during the CD fad don't comparatively buy many old records these days and I'll never be into streaming, it's just not my style at all and If I want to listen to something I'll buy it.

I'd not use Reverb vinyl or whatever it's called anyway, it's got no real standing compared to discogs.

By conveniently ignoring the rest of my post (the bit about them being active in the live music scene) , you prove my point. Binary. Either or.

Judging people based on the format they choose vs what they listen to seems high school-esque to me.

I'm not judging anyone based on format, I personally don't give a shit, I buy mostly vinyl and have done for a long time (or always if that's clearer) and I've some deep personal connections with some record sellers but I've zip all interest in record collecting chat. I'm interested in music not format and I'd roll my eyes at that list if it was streams or sheet music or most whistled just as much.

I do care that artists get paid fairly and Spotify don't do that, since it's barely one step up from not paying at all. You might think otherwise but I'd imagine that if you had an album out yourself, you'd much prefer someone bought it in whatever format you offered it in rather than spotified it, guaranteeing you a cheque for the square root of fuck all.

I ignored the bit about the live scene because it's got nothing to do with buying records (and in any case in 99% of cases I'd have already bought the record pre gig) and if this was a thread about the top twenty dinosaurs still touring the sheds then I'd have considered it.
