2017 Favorite Album(s)?
Always a good chance to discover new music by checking out what different folks liked this year.
To keep it navigable, please submit at most 3 records. Otherwise everyone's energy is depleted after clicking on the 75 links in shadowplay's post (thanks again for all the great recs!)
Here are mine:
1. Charlotte Gainsbourg -- Rest. So so so good. I have been a fan since the first album with Air and Jarvis, but this new one is really amazing. Listening to Sylvia Says as I type this.
2. Slowdive -- this is how all comebacks should be. A beautiful record. I put it on repeat and fall asleep in the second half of the album, and then wake up in mild terror when Star Roving starts again.
I will only be slightly embarrassed to give an honorable mention to Noel Gallagher's Who Built the Moon. I will probably never listen to this again in 3 months, but I am enjoying a few songs from that album right now.

out of all the albums this year, this was the one i kept going back to. something felt so right with this album. so it's not a perfect album but it seems like there was a lot of love that went into this album. p.s. how much rent do you think i would have to pay a week to live in her hair?

It was a great year for new music for me, being a dinosaur, with Slowdive, Ride, and The New Year putting out new albums. Their new albums would be my choice for best of the year with Slowdive taking 1st..

Great, great year for music, but one that really blew me away was Richard Dawson's new album. Weird dissonant english folk with some electronics thrown in every once in a while.

yes! excellent album! definitely one of my favorites this year.mediocreplayer wrote: ↑Fri Dec 08, 2017 8:16 pm1. Charlotte Gainsbourg -- Rest. So so so good. I have been a fan since the first album with Air and Jarvis, but this new one is really amazing. Listening to Sylvia Says as I type this.
2 more i suppose:
2. Chris Stapleton - From A Room Vol. 2. Just great songwriting, and i seem to like Vol. 2 even more than Vol 1, hence why i chose it for this list.
3. The National - Sleep Well Beast

In no particular order:
Au.Ra Cultivations
Gold Class Drum
Oh Sees Orc
Fazedaze Morningside
Jade Imagine What the Fuck was I thinking EP
Mere Women Big Skies
And then there's those Shadowplay shared gems, darn you David and your need to share music!
Oh bugger it I can't narrow it down to 3

It's 3 LP's...does that count as three records?
1. GAS - Narkopop
2. GAS - Narkopop
3. GAS - Narkopop
Utterly awe inspiring. The deep forest disco is dialed a little more in-focus than the boreal haze of say Pop or Königsforest, but IMO every bit as brilliant.

Re: 2017 Favorite Album(s)?
2017 was mostly just 2016 on glorious repeats, but here was my most listened to this year:
-Ben Lovett's soundtrack for the indie Sci-Fi film Synchronicity
-Dear Hunter (ESPECIALLY Acts IV and V)
-The Arcs: Yours, Dreamily (Dan Auerbach's band/project)
-Broadcast (just discovered them this year thanks to OSG, so they've been on repeat a lot)
-Lettuce: Crush (ok, mostly just Phyllis, but it's good all around)
-Minus The Bear: Planet Of Ice
-Saosin: Along The Shadow
-Stranger Things season 1 score
-Sianvar: Stay Lost

I've loved all 5 albums that King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard have released this year, all completely independent of each other. The most recent one is especially good with there being a little more on the synth side.

Really beautiful choice, the GAS return and the [url=https://soundcloud.com/tresorberlin/set ... 295}Porter Ricks surfacing with Anguila Electrica [/url] points to the existence of a previously undiscovered minimal techno comet that swings into sight of earth every 17 years.nanamour wrote: ↑Sun Dec 10, 2017 5:14 pmIt's 3 LP's...does that count as three records?

I really need to think on this, I'm hopeless with lists.

That solo dan Auerbach record has probably gotten the most rotation in terms of new and 2017. It's poppy and user friendly and my daughter will sing along, so that checks most of my day to day boxes.
Satan's Graffiti or Gods art, sentimental goblin, sleep well beast, and everything now round out my honorable mentions.

Re: 2017 Favorite Album(s)?
2017 seemed to be a pretty great year. Some of our favorites at chez la mort:
1. Slowdive (star roving might be my song of the year -- just a perfect epitome of what they do well)
2. Secret Meadow lovely indie pop from Indonesia (yes, there's a pun in there). Nothing new or groundbreaking but one of the better recreations of what the mid-late 90s sounded like and great songs
3. Drab Majesty (!). Some great Musicmaster/duosonic (?) + chorus tones in there. Plus: tunics
4. Fake laugh - more pop. Really great songs. (Discovered this and Secret Meadow from the Big Takeover magazine -- well worth checking out if your tastes align, as their love and exuberance for music can be contagious.)
5. Alvvays - Antisocialites. Not quite as magical as their debut, but still catchy and engaging pop. Sunny/dark songs fit with out times.
I thought the new Charlotte Gainsbourg was really good. It's uncanny how much the record sounds like an updated version of her parents' records (esp. Melody Nelson). I can see liking the record the more you listen to it.
The KEXP Listeners' top albums list is also a good place to find stuff. And one of our personal favorite records is way (way) near the bottom of list. (!)

Just came across the Agent Blå album. Postpunky melodic death rock from Sweden. like an X-Mal Savages. https://agentbla.bandcamp.com/
