Bootsy Collins with James Brown on this motherfucker right here also.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

I think that's the late, great Bob Babbitt on that track. But it's excellent playing as to be expected!Larry Mal wrote: ↑Wed Jun 06, 2018 5:50 pmShit, I could do this all day. Here's another favorite of mine, James Jamerson on Marvin Gaye's "Right On". Jamerson weaves an ever-changing bass line throughout the song, it's contrapuntal, driving, percussive, all at the same time, he drives the song and dances around it... fucking amazing.

I love that song. I love the bass playing too, definitely would’ve suggested it if you hadn’t already.timtam wrote: ↑Wed Jun 06, 2018 8:44 pmAlso Peter Hook.

The first song that came to mind was Bombast by The Fall. I don’t own a bass, but I’d buy one just to play this.

Wow! Thank you for all the recommendations! Didn't know this thread would get so active haha
I'm really digging a lot of these tunes. I made sure to give them at least a quick listen and Already provided a spotify playlist with all of them!

Re: What is your favorite bassline?
Weirdly the two that spring to mind are both double bass. I could probably jump down any number of great post punk bassline rabbitholes but these two just elbowed their way in.
Red Snapper - Lo Beam which little more than a bassline.
Alice Coltrane - Journey in Satchidananda not so much a bassline as massive tectonic wobble.

Mine is I guess totally uncool but my test out basslines are Boney M - Daddy Cool and Rasputin

Oh man, so many....
Kudos to The Fall choice! And I just discovered that Alice Coltrane recently, holy crap. I picked up my bass just to figure it out it was so damn entrancing.
Tom Robinson (Sector 27) - Can't Keep Away, this one is just all over the place, love it.
The Smiths - Barbarism Begins at Home, same thing all the way through, but why mess with a good thing?
Shellac - WIngwalker, so menacingly awesome
NoMeansNo - Big Dick, Canada's other great bass-heavy band

Not my favourite, though he's a great bass player, but I thought I'd share this cause it's funny to hear slap bass in this context
This is one of my favourites

Re: What is your favorite bassline?
I think there was a thread a while back about bands everyone seems to like whose appeal is totally unfathomable to you. Talk Talk definitely fall into that category for me. What am I missing? What exactly is appealing about their sound/songs?BlixaFan wrote: ↑Thu Jun 07, 2018 7:42 pmfuck yeah!! Hell yea, NMA is amazing, and still putting out great albums. That first album is something special. I believe it's Stuart Morrow, though, unless his friends call him "John"?UlricvonCatalyst wrote: ↑Fri Jun 08, 2018 8:58 amI used to be quite impressed by John Morrow's bass playing. Fans of Simon Gallup and Peter Hook will find themselves in their comfort zone listening to the likes of Vengeance and 1984. He's at his most show-offy on Notice Me.

I'm surprised I haven't seen this yet:
Duran Duran - Rio

I remember being mesmerized by this bassline before I could even play any instrument.

Re: What is your favorite bassline?
I was writing purely from a now failing memory, and, remembering that the Spanish guitar solo on 1984 was credited to 'Juan Morro', figured his first name was John.daemon wrote: ↑Fri Jun 08, 2018 10:53 amHell yea, NMA is amazing, and still putting out great albums.
