I was exactly the right age for Monday's heyday--I was teen when stuff like Like A Virgin was coming out--and pretty much sneered at anything she did at the time. Now, of course, I know a lot of it was very good and when it comes on the radio I don't change the dial.

When I do think about her, I think mostly about how "shocking" she was perceived to be at the time. I've got an 11 year old and Like A Virgin came on. I was explaining to her, without getting into the details, how controversial Madonna was in the beginning. It mean nothing because this kid, because of one of her dumb friends, has already seen shit like that Nicky Manaj Anaconda video. With Madonna, while she may have opened the door for a lot nastier stuff, it's amazing how tame it all seems now. An exposed bra strap, singing about sex, whatever she was up to just ahead of the Justify My Love video--it's all so tame compared to what's going on in rap and pop now. I'm not really sure what to even make of the cultural shift, but things really did change.

There's good songs from later in her career but I reckon it's mostly down to producers. eg. Mirwais and Jaques Lu Cont. But she has a knack in recognising uprising talent.
I liked her from just after I started appreciating 'good music'. Probably 1990 or so. It was a shame to hear she wasn't singing live latterly and shows were short.

I hated it when I was 12 or whatever, but Like a Prayer took on special meaning for me in college. I wasn’t into the fraternity row thing, but where to go when I wanted to party? Answer: the parties held by he international (read South and Central American) students! Lots of Salsa Meringue being played, which was awesome for dancing. Typically , though, the part of the night where the dance floor was most electric was when the long version of Like a Prayer got played. Good times!

I'm going to pitch in Hung Up as peak recentish Madonna (it's actually a teenager), I also really like the Get Together song off this album. Hung Up is a total floor killer from it's pop socks to it's to it's Farrah Fawcett flip fringe, five minutes of unimpeachably cheeky pop hedonism.

Undeniably, a potent distillate of pop pleasure. I don't think I've ever seen someone within the immediate vicinity of Hung Up piping out of a speaker who hasn't busted a move or at least engaged in some serious head bobbing.

I'm putting it right out there and say that I can't be the only one wishing Madge would just lift the fucking phone to Johnny Jewel, a three song 12' is all I'm asking. Seriously how hard can it be.
