aside from Paul Simon (Graceland, Rhythm of the Saints) and Talking Heads (Nothing But Flowers)...

does anyone know bands that incorporate this style?

Johnny Clegg. South African dude; he and his band are amazing. Check out the Putumayo Presents A Johnny Clegg and Juluka Collection. It's stellar. A mix of African and western music during the Apartheid.

Also a lot of Brazilian music incorporates a lot of that sort of thing.

There is a band named Extra Golden that incorporates some of that style in their albums & they're fantastic albums. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oUnj53RfvU0&t=8s. There album "Thank You Very Quickly" may be what you're looking for more than their others but I couldn't find a link & don't have time to dig.

Well you've got Kanda Bongo Man who that guy is covering.

Are you looking for similar Congolese descended music or are you looking for white guys appropriating it?

I think the very recent compilation of 80's French African music 'Nouvelle Ambiance' would be a great place to start and it comes with nice in depth sleevenotes. Or if you are looking for something more general and less curated there's the CD The Rough Guide to Congolese Soukous. Orchestre Vévé - Vintage Verckys is probably a must have if you want a window into the development of the style.

If you are looking for more of a westernised soup of African and western influences look at Me and My Friends who record on Soundway records who put out a lot of African music on sevens like.

I'm far from an expert on Congolese music, don't even know enough to be dangerous and am very prone to getting my African styles horribly entangled in a waythats probably as insulting as conflograting Scottish and Irish folk music but this is the best I can do.

If this thread is still viable I'll post a follow up when I next see my city comrade Brian who is something of an specialist in African music and who records Afro futurist music as Auntie Flo.
