double nickles is one of the first music purchases I made that was outside the musical influences of my older brothers (classic rock, jam bands)...the ferocious brevity of it was so...in your face...I found this and I don't need you...punk.

I don't remember having the record...and it must have been pre-cd...I guess it was a cassette tape.

I almost don’t believe you, Pat. Almost.

Self-improvement plan:

Get the entire Minutemen catalog (it’s not that big).
Make a chronological playlist of that whole catalog on your personal digital device.
Play on loop for next six months.

I ain’t even jokin’. Listen until it’s all internalized. Then you will be a better person than you were before.

Yep, do this. You can crush two or three (or more, depending) of their records within a single hour, and their EPs are not to miss. In my experience, they didn’t release anything unworthy of the rest of their discography.

Also, try to catch Mike Watt live if ever given the chance. I’ve seen him twice over the past handful of years and he is absolutely awe-inspiring to watch.

Good stuff - all that up there is good advice. I'd also recommend reading "Our Band Could Be Your Life" for more insight into the Minutemen and other bands of the era.

And yeah, if you get the chance to see Mike Watt live, in whatever form (he's toured Europe a few times in recent years with different bands - most recently as bass for Flipper, but I've seen him with the Italian band he plays with: Il Sogno Del Marinaio a few times, his band with Sam from the Go Team: Cuz, and with The Missingmen (Raul Morales and Tom Watson).

Watt's website has tons of tour diaries which make for entertaining reading.

It's never too late to embrace the Minutemen. "What Makes a Man Start Fires?" is my favorite place to start because it's a bit more contained than Double Nickles, but there's really nothing bad in the catalogue and I wish more bands now were inspired sonically by their mishmash of influences as well as their embrace of black American musical traditions.

Can also confirm that Watt is still great to see live. I saw him 4-5 years ago with the Secondmen and it was awesome.

Glad to hear your reading Our Band too, just make sure to take that book with a sizeable grain of salt. It helped to introduce a lot of those bands to people who missed out in the first place, including me, but 15 years removed from when I first picked it up I'm not sure how happy I am with the ripple effect that it's had on what music from that era has become "canon." As awesome as SST and Dischord are, I think the fact that there hasn't been any companion books springing up to cover everything else going on (Camper Van Beethoven, REM, The Paisley Underground, any of the softer/gentler/less hardcore-influenced stuff that weren't on K) has given people a somewhat one-sided view of what the underground rock scene in the US looked like at the time.
