Re: Uncool music for dorks.
That theory only applies to you young ones ..... if you are old and back in the 60s/70s your parents said that there was never a pop song that was worth listening to and JAMES LAST was what we heard on the cassette recorder in the old 1967 station wagon or MARCHING BANDS OF THE BRITISH ARMY or what about MANTOVANI or just crap Opera shit, then you rebelled at the age of 8 and continually listened to your only Herb Alpert & TTB LP.
relaxing alternative to doing actual work ...

Re: Uncool music for dorks.
I think it’s part of evolution to dislike the music of your parents, there’s was nothing more uncool
than listening to your parents music as a teenager. The dorky part comes into play when at some
point you come around full circle and embrace it, not all of it, but the tunes that get stuck in your head.
The late 60’s / 70’s was AM radio for me, bubble gum pop and EZ listening or my dad playing
chromatic harmonica and guitar. That was even less of an influence than soundtrack music,
either movies or more frequently TV, I didn’t have a record player ever , so that’s what it was.
I keep checking this thread but no one has even come close to the dorkiness that is Lawrence Welk,
I haven’t listened in a while but I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t turn it off if I heard it.

It's funny you mention Lawrence Welk, because some of us for sure are fans. *raises hand* There's been a lot of love shown on the board for Neil LeVang, LW's jazzmaster-picking guitarist.
I remember it coming on when I was a kid and my mom making me turn it off, but even back then I liked it.

Apparently I have landed on the island of misfit guitar players.

I like some Shostakovich, but I really like Chopin the most. I like melodic or minimalist classical music. Don't care for grandiose stuff like Beethoven, Wagner or Bach.s_mcsleazy wrote: ↑Thu Jan 14, 2021 3:28 amdave brubeck. dude has some super catchy songs that you don't even realise are in odd time signatures. i've heard some jazz fans call it square jazz or breakfast jazz, but fuck it, i eat a more healthy breakfast when listening to brubeck.
shostakovich. honestly, most classical music kinda goes over my head but when i watched tantacrul's video on shostakovich, i kinda got it. his chamber ensemble stuff is beautifully dark but his big orchestral stuff is basically him being commissioned by stalin and using it to poke fun at stalin with instrumental music. if you've not seen tantacrul's video on shostakovich, here it is: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MCxzMYVvHBg
Brubeck is a fave of mine, as is Thelonious Monk and similar artists. Favorite modern jazz groups are John Schofield and MMW.
I listen to so much stuff. Dorky stuff? I spend a large amount of time listening to German language hip hop and rock. Russian stuff too. Russian band Glintshake (like a Russian Talking Heads meets DNA).

This forum is amazing for finding unknown or underground music. I must have discovered at least 200+ projects since 2009, and that's a very conservative estimate.

My grandmother watched Welk religiously. She was from Saskatoon.mackerelmint wrote: ↑Sun Jan 17, 2021 6:14 amIt's funny you mention Lawrence Welk, because some of us for sure are fans. *raises hand* There's been a lot of love shown on the board for Neil LeVang, LW's jazzmaster-picking guitarist.

I am still waiting for more Weird Al. I don't think he ever intended to be taken seriously.marqueemoon wrote: ↑Thu Jan 14, 2021 7:57 pmMy son had a Weird Al phase. Gotta say I didn’t hate it.
If you can't laugh at or with Weird Al (or Jimmy Buffett), you gotta be dead inside.

My favorite music is finding something that I have never heard before, truly.BoringPostcards wrote: ↑Sun Jan 17, 2021 12:12 pmThis forum is amazing for finding unknown or underground music. I must have discovered at least 200+ projects since 2009, and that's a very conservative estimate.
It fluctuates but I still have a religious need to hear live music just for that reason,
I used to do sound at clubs more than playing them just to hear fresh stuff, plus
it was never easy getting gigs playing original music and I could never go all in on a music career.

Indeed I can relate to your entire post. I also did a lot of sound guy gigs. I did play in a few serious bands, but none really took off. Harder where I live to get a band off the ground. I stopped 'trying' when I was 27 or so, back in 2007/8.Scout wrote: ↑Sun Jan 17, 2021 1:21 pmMy favorite music is finding something that I have never heard before, truly.BoringPostcards wrote: ↑Sun Jan 17, 2021 12:12 pmThis forum is amazing for finding unknown or underground music. YES! This is why I listen to a lot of noise and experimental music, because the listener has no idea where it is going or even what is making sound. Your point about live music makes me sad because in the town I live in, it is nearly impossible to find new sounds live. It’s all hundred year old blues and jazz, or 20 year old metal. New Orleans is just not progressive that way.Scout wrote: ↑Sun Jan 17, 2021 1:21 pmMy favorite music is finding something that I have never heard before, truly.

As a kid I listened to doo-wop on the radio, some classical, and some country (live since my dad played 5-string b***o in a bluegrass band). By 5th grade I had my own collection going, and 6th grade was Twisted Sister & Mötley Crue...
Anyone remember the soundtrack to Revenge Of The Nerds? I do!
Or when electronic music was exclusively made and listened to by nerds? Then techno & rap broke it out.
