Post your Pipeline cover

Post by Tyrannocaster » Wed Feb 14, 2024 1:26 pm

Yeah, yeah, everybody can play Pipeline, the song that launched a thousand careers, lol. But it's not as simple as a lot of guitar players think; most can play the simple melody, the Em-Am vamp and tail, and they do a version of the bridge, but a lot of them never learn the star of the show - which I think is the "rhythm" guitar part (which doesn't contain a single chord). I can't get over how good a performance the Chantays did; high schoolers showing up a lot of big names.

Still, there are interesting covers, and it would be fun to hear some. Here's mine, which is the most faithful recreation of the original I could do - no power chords or distortion, this is more of an analysis and love letter than anything else. Here it is: https://hearthis.at/tyrannocaster/pipeline-1e/

Let's hear yours.

Wow, that's great, love that tune. In fact, I played a handful of gigs with a cover band and that was the only surf tune we did, so fun.

Isn't it, though? I never realized how much Dick Dale is in Pipeline (aside from the famous gliss, of course), but the rhythm part is pure DD. And the group is so clean and tight; it's a perfect performance. Their mimed performance on the Lawrence Welk show is worth watching on Youtube too just for the earnest band intro Spicard does. I love the prehistoric Wurlitzer, too. And the pre-Beatles suits. (1963)

EDIT: here's that appearance on the Lawrence Welk show. The Chantays and Welk were on the same record label.

In keeping with the title of this thread, I found some audio of our cover from 2018. I apologize for the quality but it was taken outside with a phone.

Yeah I wish the audio was better because it sounds like we're missing some of what's going on, but even so, I like it. Got the right feel.
