The Softcore Post-Hardcore Thread

I recently discovered the truly magnificent Jericho Sirens by Hot Snakes and it kind of rekindled my love for post-hardcore and I thought maybe there should be a thread dedicated to the genre.

My tastes are pretty narrow (and vanilla), to be honest: Relationship of Command is one of my desert island albums and De-Loused in the Comatorium, Octahedron and The Mars Volta are among my all-time favorites, but I gotta admit it's been hard to find bands/albums that would hit as hard as those; one of the very few is the Finnish band Tryer with their album Kukkia kaamoksesta.

Anyway, who do you like? Know any local bands worth a listen?

Also listen to Metz, Weird Nightmare, Ghost Work, title fight, ovlov, fiddlehead, etc. (these are all more recent bands)

I'd list Hot Snakes, Drive Like Jehu, Unwound, Fugazi etc as the classics but I also listened to Current, Indian Summer, Boys Life, Falling Forward, Guilt, Neurosis and a pile of more evil stuff too, etc.

I AM POST-HARDCORE TRASH. no really. i often joke that post-hardcore is my "home" genre. the genre that always feels like i've returned home. my favorite era is the 2nd wave or "pre-9/11" era stuff and if you told me to list the big 4 albums of that era, i'd say it's

relationship of command - at the drive-in
the shape of punk to come - refused
the argument - fugazi
leaves turn inside you - unwound.

i think the evolution of post-hardcore has been really interesting and kinda weird. i think because post-hardcore is such an open genre (basically progressive punk) there's a lot of bands that sound nothing like each other under the same umbrella and has lead to soo many micro-genres that bands like my chemical romance and trumans water could both be considered post-hardcore is kinda funny (yes, that first MCR album is a post-hardcore album, so is the first paramore album) but i think it shows what makes the genre interesting. i'll admit, a lot of the "boy bands with breakdowns" bands kinda aren't for me. but i was too busy with the brit-rock post-hardcore of the era and that's always the interesting thing about the genre, if one sound isn't for you, there's going to be ones that are.

also worth mentioning they have rob crow from pinback and thingy. to the innocent is such a classic album. not really post-hardcore but neat as hell

yeah i like this but prefer the Hot Snakes vox, Reis's solo album is pretty sweet too

Ex Everything is one of my favorite new bands, it consists of half the members of Kowloon Walled City (another one of my favorite bands).

Less Art is another great band that is 50% KWC-members.

Check out Spitehouse too, I really like melodic hardcore style stuff. They nail it.

The line between post-hardcore and emo is pretty thin...so some of these suggestions can be emo?

And on the topic of At the Drive-In, they were the band that got me into punk/hardcore when I was teen. I had never seen mexican-american/latino kids playing punk until them. It really shifted my musical taste!

Anyway, I love "relationship of command" BUT I think "vaya" is where it's at for me.
