New to offsets... Squire JMJM

Post by Rbpicker » Sun Jul 28, 2019 5:52 pm

Greetings! New offset owner, a Squire Mascis Jazzmaster. I’ve owned many strats and teles in the past, but this JM is another beast altogether. I’m loving the wider nut width on the JMJM.

One issue, however. I took off the gold pickguard to install a tortoise guard. Now the guitar hums like a two-dollar radio. I guess the shielding provided by the aluminum guard really make a difference. I may just put it back like it was.

Anyway, glad to be here and learn from you all. Thanks.

welcome Rb! Don't forget you have the option to cover the back of your tort guard with copper foil....

Hoping this image will upload. New Mascic JM with tort guard. Buzzing is irritating, but I can live with it, this guitar sounds so good. A steal for the price.

Hmmm...image didn’t happen.
It is hosted on Imageshack, but I guess I missed a step (or two) in posting it here.

If I was a byrd, I'd be mighty sore every time they shut the door and I don't think I'd sing...

Hey my 2 cents:
the gold anodized guards make SUCH a massive difference when it comes to noise reduction. I recently swapped out the tort guard on my classic player for a gold anodized one and i couldn't believe how much quieter it became. Before i couldn't really record anything with it, but since the change It's practically hum free right now.

I had my tort pickguard shielded with aluminum tape, but it made such a minimal difference compared to the gold pickguard.

I wonder if it would be possible to stack the 2 pickguards on top of each other (i'm guessing that would be too thick, but it's just a thought).

If you want to keep the tort, use one of these: https://www.mojotone.com/guitar-parts/S ... ield-Plate

Also make sure to shield the body cavities for completeness. If you do a continuity test on the cavities now you'll see the graphite paint doesn't help much in that regard.
