10's or 11's on my VM Squire Jazzmaster?

Post by Offsetguy97 » Sat Apr 13, 2013 7:30 am

Ehyo, I just bought this beauty of a guitar, but their are 9's on there now and I feel like I'm gonna break them every time I play. I don't bend a a lot but I do like steady, solid strings. Whats the over all consensus? 10's or 11's on your jazzmaster?

I don't know if theirs anything different with the squire but any jazzmaster or jaguar for that matter deserves a set of .11 nickel flat wound strings

I play 11s on all my electrics, so.

i'm sure the reason Fender/Squier (and most brands, honestly) decided to put 9's on the VM's is so they seem easy to play when they're on display in a store somewhere. but offsets were designed when a "light" string gauge was 12's, and i think 9's are awful on JM's or Jags*. they certainly don't do the guitars any favors when it comes to strings popping out of the bridge, and that sort of thing.

i'd recommend putting at least a set of 11's on it and see how that feels for awhile. to me it seems like 11's on Jazzmasters and (especially) Jags feel like 10's on most other guitars. i use 11's on my VMJM (previously Ernie Ball Power Slinkies but i've had some "issues" and EB has been of absolutely no help, so i'll be switiching to D'Addario when this set dies.) i've never liked flatwound strings, but that's a personal taste thing so go with what you like. i'd also point out that stainless steel strings are probably going to be WAY too bright on a Jazzmaster, so standard nickel-steel or pure nickel will probably sound better. but strings are cheap, so try a bunch of different ones to see what you think sounds and feels the best!

I put 11's on all my Jazzmasters. I like the tension, and once set up properly there are no buzz issues with stock bridge/saddles.

I use D'Addario's Balanced Tension, 11-50's. They sound and play great. It feels like I am playing 10's. I also tune a full step down to D standard. 8)
