I decided to go with the AT 4050 and found one in excellent condition on Reverb for about $420 all in with the shock mount, case, bag, and even a 20 ft XLR cable, so overall a great deal.

I've only used it a couple times so far but am pretty blown away by the difference on vocals. The improvement over the SM58 and MXL990 was a lot less subtle than I expected. It sort of reminds me when I first got glasses in the 4th grade and learned that it's normal to be able to see the individual leaves on trees. Looking forward to using it more. Thanks again to all for the recs!

I remember when I got my first condenser microphone, I was blown away also by how good it sounded on acoustic guitar and other things. How much detail they can capture.

That was a good choice.
Back in those days, everyone knew that if you were talking about Destiny's Child, you were talking about Beyonce, LaTavia, LeToya, and Larry.

Yup, that's an incredible choice for a first condenser. If I'd had that I probably wouldn't have needed to buy all these other stupid microphones that I have. :w00t:

The first "nice" signal chain I ever recorded through was a rented Drawmer 1969 and AT4050 and it ruled. Congrats!

I love my Rode NT1 (newer version, black one that comes with the shockmount and metal popshield). It's pretty neutral, but i've it on vocals for all my albums thus far, kick out, acoustic, hand percussion, and it always does the job!

If you have a source for 441s under $500 please let the rest of us know.
For sure you’re not going to find one new at that price. :D

Congrats! Good deal on all that. Also can be a great mic on vocal duties. I bought it mainly for that many moons ago. I’ve since purchased more expensive mics and I keep grabbing the 4050 for various tasks including vocals to this day. It’s a keeper mic cabinet mic.
