The drummer's equivalent to a beat vintage jm.
Piecing together a fun Gretsch kit, keeping it funky. Just grabbed an old refin 60's Gretsch bass drum and it looks great next to the new snare and hats, so I figured I'd share.
Much better pics to come. Sorry for the ugly room

Very cool...I am not really a drummer...more like a guy that plays the drums with a band a very now and then, but I could rock something minimal like that.
Resident Spartan.

It is very minimal... I guess it would be more like half a vintage jm.

Unf. That is sweet.
Honestly, I'm trying to pick up as many good 60s Slingerland Players Grade pieces that I can. It's absurd how cheap those go for just because they don't have as much of a name as Gretsch or Ludwig.

Nice!! Rogers is the same way.
So I grabbed a 10" brooklyn tom in ebony satin stain for $100 off the local CL, and it sounds as good as a rack tom is capable of sounding. Now to hunt for a Gretsch floor in the same finish... May have to refinish one instead of buying, new floors from Gretsch run upwards of $500.

minimal drum kits are the best. the last thing i want to hear live on a record is the constant SSSSSSSSSSSSS
of cymbals all over the place.

Hopefully it will stay that way for a while. Going to hopefully grab a Meinl 22" Jazz Medium Ride or Big Apple ride, maybeeeee a splash, then a floor tom, and call it a day for a while.

yeah! i like that style. and i agree simple is mighty when it comes to drums... unlike my guitar rig
here's mine - mostly pieces given to me by long-time drummer friends!
'mis-matched' 50's Slingerland Radio King kick and floor tom, 80's Pearl snare (S. Copeland style, before he had a sig. model)
... and i'm real picky about cymbals, i went to Pro Drum and played all of their cymbals for months, gradually buying the hats, a ride, and another crash, mostly new at the time. then i got lucky and found a bunch more over the years. when bands leave the neighboring studio spaces, they often leave all kinds of decent stuff behind!

That shit is beautiful. ^ That bass drum especially... I'm finding I really like the way a big kick comes through a mic, I've been thinking about grabbing an old slingerland, maybe WFL bass in 24" or 26"... That white pearl is gorgeous.
What's that snare made of? The 14" Brooklyn in those pics is brass, it's an incredible snare.
Also yeah... Cymbals, you gotta be picky about. Just no easy way to make a bad cymbal sound better.
The hats in the pics are Meinl's Byzance Jazz in 13... I'm thinking about a dream 22 or 24 ride to go with it. Rupp's drums in Denver carry a few, and I'll be up there pretty soon.

This is my equivalent of a refinished and modded vintage Jazzmaster...

Camco! Los Angeles represent!! very cool.
that's funny - i figured the same as you about getting a kick - i wanted a 24" or 26", kind of a Bonham approach. but my friend gave me that old Slingerland - it's a 20! and with a new batter head (the Evans type with the damper ring) and the ancient Ambassador head on the front, it tuned up real nicely to exactly the sound i wanted. never in ten years have i thought about trying another kick at my place.
the snare construction...i don't know! luckily, i don't get obsessed with nerdity in drums like i do with guitars and amps. well, maybe a little bit

I'd love a 24, 26 as well as the 20, but not instead. The 20 I'm liking for more modern stuff, but there is something really special about a low, boomy kick behind a nice mic.
