Drums, on the cheap?

Post by Don » Sat Sep 05, 2009 7:12 pm

I know this is probably a misnomer but can anyone recommend a decent drum set that comes with everything ready to rock for less than 800 dollars or am I better off getting a souless drum machine which come to think of it if The Cure can pull it off ala Porngraphy ...I think that album used mostly some type of drum machine....

Do you play? For a noob it isn't as easy as it looks, took me a while to realise I lack the basic co-ordination between all my limbs to get really good at drums. So i've gone the drum machine route. It also means you can have a beat going and play over it, adjust the beat, play over that... and so on. I guess you could play with loops a bit and do it with something like Ableton but it's more of a challenge to straight-up compose I think.

800 dollars could probably get you a second hand Machinedrum. Which aside from being a great drum synth/drum machine/arranger, can also do a lot of weird synth stuff. I love mine, aside from the odd tamborine or strange percussive synth pattern it's very rare I trust anything else with my beats. The sampling version is cool and all but unless you're planning on going super in-depth it's not worth worrying about if you can't afford one.

Search the bay. I had a buddy buy his dream setup, a vintage Gretsch kit for $700~. With shipping he was just under your target value. I'm not a drummer but from what I can tell it's just a matter of right time and looking often. Best of luck.

what style are you looking to play? steer clear of d drum, first act ect but any brand like tama, pearl, gretsch, ludwig will be dandy. Cymbals are another story, they will probably set you back a few ( look for a mid-level starter set). when it comes to drums the best investment is training yourself how to tune them properly. With a good ear a 10 dollar garage sale find can sound pretty great.

i was about to say man DDrum are the ultimate. Yeh man there are some sweet gretsch kits on ebay for sale for like $500 to $700 and cause your lucky enough to be in the US alot of the store will have free shipping. granted you will need to buy cymbals whether you buy one of those cymbals pack or individually its up to you.

I have to ask though... how did a drum stool ever got named a "throne" in the lingo? Is that irony gone wrong or something?

Yeah, you should talk J i m m y (aka P o o p). He has a Ludwig set that comes with Zildjian ZBT cymbals. Bet he'd cut you a fantastic deal on 'em.
