Deepmind Vs JU-06

Post by Unicorn Warrior » Wed Mar 21, 2018 2:24 pm

Really wanted a Juno, but because of the elevated price and my budget being around $500 -600 I'm going to have to settle for something else.

The ju-06 has risen in price lately as well due to its discontinuation. Which makes me wonder if the deepmind is just a better value over all since it is analog and has more features.

So, I want the big warm 80s pads that I know for certain that a juno is capable of. What am I better off going with?

The JU-06 does sound like a 106 but it’s only got 4 note polyphony. I’d get the deep mind. I’m not a huge fan of the DM but it’s more useful as an instrument than the ju-06

Take the Deepmind. It does the Juno sounds brilliantly, features an extra DCO, more voices, all the modulation possibilities you can dream of (except cross-modulation) plus a keyboard and an extended effects section. And it's analogue. For the price, it's a no-brainer.

Do you have one? I've talked to a few people who've played it and thought it sounded kinda weak compared to an actual Juno, but I'm the same as Unicorn Warrior: I want that sound and can find Deepmind's much cheaper than actual Juno's.

I have owned the Deepmind 12 for a year and it keeps growing on me. You'll never get done with it. Really, there's endless possibilities with it.

The Juno has very limited features to it, but a great basic sound as we all know. I played a Juno 106, which was in our rehearsal space, in the 90s. There's decades between, but I can't hear the Deepmind sounding weak in comparison.
You can make it sound weak if you want, of course ;-). But also extremely fat. There's 12 analog voices, each featuring 2 DCOs, and you can stack as many as you want (reducing polyphony). Going with six voice polyphony, like a Juno, gives you four oscilators for each voice where the Juno would still only feature one. Add to this that you can detune the Deepmind oscilators to taste. And there's a low-boost button if you can't get enough low-end fatness.

In short, I think you'll find the Deepmind plenty satisfying. And a lot fun to noodle around with.

A Roland Boutique JU-06 module is really nothing in comparison (the JX-03 is way better, featuring two DCOs pr. voice and cross-modulation - but still only four voice polyphony).

... And if digital is not an issue with you, the Waldorf Blofeld module is extremely flexible and can do almost anything, at about the same price as a Roland Boutique ...

I was only briefly tempted by the JU-06 between the 4-voice limit and the fact that I missed the original run and they were just starting to get expensive. The Blofeld (LOVE the name) is pretty cool, but I really want something like a Juno or the Deepmind that has a keyboard to it (full hardware synth).

How does your's sound with the effects? Did you edit the effects off, or just leave them?

I posted this in the Synth thread, but I just bought a Studiologic Sledge, which is based on the Blofeld engine and has a full keyboard and knob-per-function interface. You can reliably find the orange version used for $600. Mine's all black, though. :)

That's awesome! I'm watching the Sonicstate video of it right now. How does it compare sound-wise to a Juno? Juno sound is my big thing right now in my next synth.

I think it can probably get close but the Deepmind is definitely meant to be a whole lot like the Juno. If it's the Juno you're lusting after, that's probably the one to get. The thing that sold me on the Sledge are all of these tutorial videos in this channel: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCvNM5I ... s5Q/videos

Another thing you could be on the lookout for is a Roland HS-60, which is identical to the Juno 106 except with built-in speakers! They often go for a little cheaper: http://www.vintagesynth.com/roland/hs60.php

I ended up getting the deepmind. There were several demos on YouTube that demonstrated super lush pads. With a decent Juno costing twice as much, it's just too far out of budget to justify at this point. Especially since I'm needing another electric for alt tunings. I still plan on getting one eventually.

Still waiting for its arrival. Can't wait. Now the fun part is me actually learning to play keys. I don't know a single chord at this point lol.

I'm excited to see what you think about it! Also, get a good deal on it?

I seem to think it was pretty good. The one I made an offer on was a actually floor demo. He countered my offer a little higher, but instead with a brand new one sealed in the box with warranty for $585 shipped.

Not sure what they are typically on the new market. Several good price options on Reverb at the moment it seems.

Hot damn! That's the best price I've ever seen! Is that for Deepmind 12 or the 6 (or desktop version)?
