NDKD! Tama Imperialstar Black
so I sold my jaguar and ended up buying a drum kit. i recently took on the challenge of playing drums in my good buddy's band. I would mainly consider myself a guitarist, but drums were my first instrument, and my dad is a professional drummer... so here i am, playing drums now
I've got a killer Ludwig Supraphonic 6.5x14 that i've owned for years, and then the other weekend i picked up a Tama Imperialstar kit in black. I got a good deal for it, and it sounds really great! not the highest end kit, but it's the sound that matters. put in some felts on the heads to tame the bass drum a tiny bit.
Also have a tama granstar 8x14 snare that belongs to my dad that i can use. black kit and a 8x14 snare puts me in some serious Nirvana-era Dave Grohl territory (though my rack toms aren't nearly as enormous as his were)
enough talking though, pics!

Neat!! I Have a thing for drum kits in general and the way you set it up looks very nice. That snare looks like it sounds amazing as well. Good drumming!

picked up a 1970s Ludwig Acrolite 5x14 to add to the collection. tuned it lower and looser than my Supraphonic. haven't given it a really good whack yet, but will this weekend at rehearsals.

Re: NDKD! Tama Imperialstar Black
had a practice jam session with the band today. kit sounds killer. new heads (coated ambassador) and an Evans EQ3 on the batter side of the bass. kills.
experimenting around with tom placement and keeping the kit relatively compact. that or i'm channeling my inner Dave Grohl.
I'm a lefty but play on a mostly righty set up. ride is on my left, and crash on the right.
not sure if i like the rack tom on the left or the right yet. seemed to work alright on the right today, and kept it out of the way of the ride.
supraphonic stole the show. the acrolite is great, but i ended up swapping it out for the supra about an hour in, because it cuts through all the guitars.
-22" kick, 12" rack, 16" floor. there's also a 10" rack tom, but i'm liking just the one rack tom for now.
-Ludwig Supraphonic 6.5x14"
-heads are all coated ambassadors, kick batter is an Evans EQ3.
-No port on the kick res, but I do have a felt strip running along the inside (Bonham style)
-Hi Hats - Zildjian K 15"
-Crash (on my right) - Zildjian K Custom Session Crash 18"
-Ride (left) - Zildjian K 20" ride (early 80s)

That’s really nice!
Cool of you to broaden your horizons like that.
I was a drummer in school 6 months before I started bass, so I know what you mean.
I have a black Tama kit, I think the one with blue & olive leaves on the badges. Don’t know the series. It’s sitting in cases that I bought for it. Just not enough room, and I haven’t played drums in years.
Good on you, I hope you have a lot of fun drumming, that looks like a really nice kit.

Re: NDKD! Tama Imperialstar Black
ah cool! i guess i technically started on drums as a kid because my dad is a drummer and there were drums in the house. but then i discovered guitar when i was 9 and i stuck with that. still consider myself a guitarist, but really enjoying the drums! another rehearsal this weekend!somanytoys wrote: ↑Mon Sep 30, 2019 7:10 pmThat’s really nice!

Re: NDKD! Tama Imperialstar Black
Drums can be really difficult, sometimes coordinating all 4 limbs going at different times, but man that can be a lot of fun.
You’ll always be a guitarist, just like I’ll always be a bass player that mostly plays guitar now, but you won’t regret being able to play multiple instruments.
Hope your practice goes well - have fun!
