I had an Alesis D4 in the 90's. It had maybe 12 trigger inputs, a sound library & audio/midi out. I would buy whatever triggers I could get cheap. Did at least one ep using it for drums.

Wrote a lot of beats using a Boss Dr-660. Very small drum machine with pads to tap out beats. It had a function (quantify?) that would shift off time hits into time. Also had midi out, so you could do that via software for more control.

I program drums with a MIDI guitar. My setup is pretty old, it's the Roland GK pickup to a GR-20. Tracking's never been super tight but it works. I just record the MIDI from the GR-20 into Logic or Live, then send that MIDI to some sort of drum source, in my case generally Reason's Drums refill, which is pretty lively and has lots of sound options, at least when you're going for something realistic. I'll say it's a glitchy process but the upside is some of the messy stuff leads to happy accidents.
