Stylophone thread

Post by ugly casanova » Sat Nov 29, 2008 7:08 am

Hello boys and girls.
I've been to a tiny show yesterday. Members of the german band Tocotronic were playing a kind of Dj set with live instrumentation like a Fender Rhodes, acoustic guitars and lots of effects and funny little synthesizer instruments.

But there was one thing that caught my attention. It looked like a little box which fits in one hand and that guy (rick mc phail) was playing it with with a pen. it was definatly analog and it was kind of like a mini version of the martenot but without the string. i believe it works with an aluminum strip and the pen works as a connectior or something like that.
it sounded like a theremin and perhaps its just a midi controller. not sure about that cause it just had a line-out.

I don't have one but remember them well.

Rolf Harris was on TV a lot when I was a kid & I remember him road-testing it on the telly a few times. There were a few kids at school who had one.

State-of-the-art stuff back then!  ::)

Bowie, using it with delay at least (at the end of the track).

The original Stylophones from about '73-'75 fetch a fair price now. My dad's one is in the attic....

... somewhere.
