It's legit! Having a ribbon/ different colored mic in the middle/ mono position is pretty key. The fathead picks up a lot of fatness and beef off the snare and the other two pick up more shimmer of cymbals. Latest mix I did, I had the Fathead up a few DB over the L and R pair. Still get a nice stereo image too. I'm going to try LDC's (AT3035) as the L and R once my 2nd one gets here this week.northern_dirt wrote:I want to try out that kind of OH miking soon

I was speaking of the offset pair in the Recorderman.. or that other dude style.. I thought it was supposed to be a matched pair?.. Im pretty used to MS and XY miking... but I do TV.. so um yeah..
Im kinda interestd in these fatheads, keep hearing about them.. even with Lun mods they are cheap.
Theyn theres some dude local modding Apex and other chinese cheapo mics.. Dunno the cost, but he sounds legit.. Fox something or other.. Figure WTF, its a $200 Apex POS.. have fun..
But he goes all crazy, replacing the tube, transformer and CAP.. besides most of the innards... I gotta get a price list..

Cant have too many mics I guess...
Im about to pic up some PRE 57 shure mice, the ones with the built in mic screw off some dude, I hear they need impedance switched, but are gooder than 57's.. and Id be getting the pair for less than a pair of 57's so why not.. I hate 57's but Im a gear whore, ill probably end up with some too anyways.. haha

Re: Who all plays drums? Show your kit!
This setup is an expansion on the recorder man- 3 overheads. Matched pair panned L and R (not hard, 40-60), in typical recorder man style, but you keep the fathead panned center. All 3 mics are measured equidistant from both kick and snare so no phase issues. Here's the video I stole it from:northern_dirt wrote:NBarnes21 wrote:It's legit! Pearl Rhythm Traveler Gig. Just got this last weekend. It has mesh heads (in addition to the regular ones) for practicing. Pretty cool. I don't know what the fuck I'm doing yet, but getting there.

Re: Who all plays drums? Show your kit!
Lately, I've had a full-on obsession, with playing drums. I'm terrible, and still learning, but I just can't get enough. This weekend, I was playing along to Raveonettes and Harlem records
It's so much fun. I tend to zone out (in an almost meditative way), when I'm playing drums - I used to do that, when I was younger and played guitar a lot more than now.
I think I posted it before, somewhere else... but here's the kit

Who's the manufacturer of those drums? Very very sexy finish on the BD...

Here is my new set. I picked it up for my wife to learn on. It's actually a great sounding kit and is the perfect size for my tiny music room.

So anyway, this is the best pic that I found of my faithful companion in this cruel world, the custom acrylic 24/13/16/18 set, made by a local luthier. I'll try and take a pic next time at the rehearsal room..

PDP FS birch kit used for $400 or so. The kick drum is killer. Yamaha and Ludwig hardware, Ziljian A 20" medium ride, 13" Zildjian ZBT hats, and an 18" Zildjian ZBT crash/ride.
I do sort of a Stewart Copeland-y thing where the smallest tom all the way to the left is tuned really high (versus the other which are tuned really low) and acts almost like a snare with the snare wires off (or as my friends and I call it: bongo mode).

A pic of my current setup. Catalina Jazz club, slightly modified. Left to right, 20" Byzance jazz extra thin ride, 20" Byzance sand ride, 16" Byzance trash crash over 18" dark crash, and 20" jazz club ride.
So much fun.
