I start putting patch cables here and there on my Grandmother and most of the time nothing really happens. This tells me that I've got a lot of learning to do before I even think of going Eurorack.

Oh! Oh! Moog published a book of patches!

Moog definitely seem to be good people. My Matriarch came with a little patch book like that, and I need to check if the one that they have online is the same as the physical one I got with it. I haven't started messing with the cables and patch points on it yet. It's been crazy busy the last few months, and I'm looking forward to sitting down, REALLY getting into the Matriarch, and figuring some stuff out with it. I'd like to start doing some recordings.

Also, Todd or Maggie, if you guys have a Grandmother and the low end is as epic as the Matriarch, I'd highly recommend hooking up the output to a octave down pedal. I use a Fox Rox Octron 3 for my bass board, and when I did that, I think I may have found a way to get a cheap vasectomy

The Moog folks are good people. I moved to Asheville 18 months ago and have had a chance to go to events they and the Foundation people have put on (those groups are completely separate) and both Moog organizations do great work.

I've got one of those little Danelectro octave own pedals! It will even do one and two octaves down simultaneously!

I'm really starting to love Behringer.

That's an awesome case! I've been wanting to make my own out of wood, but the ease of having everything integrated is really nice. To be fair, Doepfer does a lot of things like that too, as the people who started Eurorack I believe. They are very affordable and solid as well if you're seriously looking into this stuff.

My thing with Eurorack is that I still want to be able to control it like a proper hardware synth. As someone said earlier, the repetition of notes and slight patch changes taking a bit of time, makes it not as easy in a performance way. But, if you're just recording at home, I don't see a downside to that. Just write all your patches down. I think a keyboard controller opens up a lot of possibilities though.

Today I learned about https://ctrlr.org/ . It lets you control basically any MIDI thing with your computer by working up a control panel for it, and you use it like a VST or AU plugin.

Naturally, people have already come up with control panels for the synths that need them. I was overjoyed (I may have shouted "YEAHHHHHHH") to find that the Roland JV synths have control panels. Those are complex synths with glorious sound and exceedingly poor front panels, so they are truly awful to try to program. The 1010 (which I have) has no front panel programmability at all, but does have all the synth engine you could want. They also have them for the MicroKorg (wheee) and Volca Keys, which pretty much convinced me that I do need one after all.

I really wish I'd known about this when I still had my Matrix 1000, as programming that thing was like getting reamed with a red hot poker. Now I'm like "ooh, I should get another". And maybe I should, at least until Behringer finally gives me my Fauxberheim.

But have you ever tried this? I've not but I'm tempted since I got my Octave Plateau Voyerta Eight back...it has 14 pages on one shitty panel. I never bothered before ..just struggled on.

I have! And I hated it. The version I had didn't really support my JV1010 very well at all. That said, if it covers a fuckin' VOYETRA(!), it's maybe worth your while. Could be better than having to roll an interface from scratch for sure.

Yeh I do have one...I bought one initially years ago, it was bought cheap as 'working intermittently.'.re-soldering some dry joints fixed it in the end. I eventually sourced the matching keyboard controller from a Vemia auction for about £50! But then in 2013 I had to sell it in a big gear cull to go towards buying my ex-partner out of my property. It was always one of my big regrets getting rid of it...so when the chance came up to buy one again at a reasonable recently price I took it.

It has such a unique sound and its very deep and powerful. Basically I would describe it as like a Jupiter 8..twin VCO, 8 voice, bi-timbral, w/ arpeggiator but with a similar programming depth and power of an Oberheim Xpander, so you can do a lot more with it.
