NSD- Casio CZ-1000

Post by Soggasaurus » Mon Mar 28, 2016 9:17 am

I just acquired my first ever synth in a pedal trade this weekend, and this thing is just too cool. I'm learning my way around the controls, but of the stock sounds I'm having the most fun with the Vibraphone setting so far. I'm really excited to put some time into playing with the existing presets, I'm sure I'll come out with some great sounds.

The only downside with it is a few of the keys in the highest octave don't trigger any sound when pressed. If this ends up being a super involved repair I'll take it to someone who actually knows what they're doing or just block off the non-functioning keys, but I'd like to give it a shot before resorting to that. Does anyone have ideas for places to start looking for the problem or guides that might help?

My first synth was a cz-1000. I've always wanted to get another one, but I'm doing ok without one right now. It is a great board and super easy to make great sounds with. The 4 note polyphony is a bit limiting, but perfect for one handed stuff. If you use it with a band, make sure you tune it. I have never worked with a cz-1000 or cz-101 that held its tuning when turned off. Have fun with it, and make sure you get the right kind of wall wart for it.

As far as the non working keys, have someone take a look. personally, most of my synth work is midi controlled so keys don't really limit what I do on that end. If you want to record with it, just write the part in a DAW and have midi do the work for you.

I've owned a CZ-1000. They're known for having issues with key contacts. You might be able to clean it and get them working again. Search Google for "CZ-1000 key contacts" and you should find some tips. I think this guy sells new contacts for the CZ-1000 as well: http://sounddoctorin.com/synthtec/parts ... lycontacts" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

I have one too. It's a lot of fun but it's been in the closet for years. :(

Thanks for the tip! I asked one of my friends who has built and repaired synths in the past to have a look, so that's where I'm going to start. In the mean time I'm getting by just fine using the functioning lower range, I'm especially loving the brass settings at the moment. I haven't attempted recording with it yet, but I'm sure I'll get around to it pretty soon.
