Can this be? 66 Mustang comp stripe.

Post by Bronco Billy » Sun Jun 26, 2016 12:26 pm

Hey guys.

This guitar just came up for sale locally. All original(except bridge), 66B neck stamp... but how can that be with the comp stripe? Refin headstock ? parts caster?
I've written to the seller, and is hoping to see it tomorrow. Listed at $1800 but open to offers and trades.

It's a refin. Stripe is wrong. Not worth near $1800....maybe $800.

He says the stripe is not original. Then it's most def is a refin.

$800? Seems low?

$800 is a little low, but not that much. Consider that a non-refin'd 66 goes for around $1,200 (that's what I paid for mine last year), and an original 69 comp stripe can be had for around $1,300. Not burgundy (blue), but then that only matters if the finish is original - I'd compare a refin to the absolute cheapest original color, and then subtract from there.

I think you might be being blinded into just thinking that it's a 60's competition burgundy Mustang with matching headstock, and even knowing it's a refin you're comparing it to the price of other competition burgundy compstangs and subtracting from that for the refin. That's the wrong way to think about it. It's a refinished 66 Mustang; subtract from that. It's worth less than an original 66 Mustang; it's not even comparable to a real competition burgundy Mustang.

It looks pretty cool. I'm gonna see it later today or maybe tomorrow.

Not quite sure how low he will go. I think he might be firm at around $1400.

This guitar was bought on ebay back in May from the USA for just under $1K.

description from the auction provides a world of knowledge on the guitar:

Mostly original except for electronics. Body, neck, pickguard, vibrato, tuning keys, neck plate are all original. Switches also, but the rest of the electronics are not. Pickups are Fender flat pole Stratocaster in Mustang covers. The covers are probably original. Pickups are vintage, year unknown. The rest of the electronics are new with USA full size pots. Whammy arm and knobs are new reproductions. Frets are in great shape, but back of neck is worn. Feels great. Finish appears to be original. Body and headstock match. Racing stripes are tape, not paint. Not sure if this is original. New flat wound strings (11's). Hard shell case appears to be original. Fender logo on neck strap. Not a museum piece. A player's guitar. Please ask all questions before bidding. I will answer best I can. Free shipping USA 48 states. Others please inquire. I ship worldwide. Please check my feedback and other listings. Thanx

Again...wouldn't agree that the finish is original, but the replacement decal looks real.

So I bought the guitar. $1350.

I got the impression that the owner have had that guitar for a longer time. He told me he bought it in Chicago.

But it's interesting. He was a vintage collector, and he checked the pickups where original and all the other stuff.

I have my doubts about the PG, because of the wide black line. Otherwise it seems to be real.

The wear is not on the body from ebay, and that is weird.

He told me he paid around $1500 for the guitar + he paid Danish tax when arriving to DK. That's around 30%.

Interesting, I'm gonna look into it.

Apart from that it's pretty darn cool, and plays nicely. Needs an adjustment, but sounds really really awesome.

EDIT: Neck plate serial is different.

PG on the 66's had a wide black stripe. (Not sure of other years, but I actually have an all-original 66.) Assuming that's pearloid; it's a little hard to tell in the pics. Almost looks white, but if it's pearloid, it's probably the original.

Hi!
It's Pearl, so it's original.

Funny how I messaged the seller about the ebay parts yesterday, and all he said was "funny it looks just the same, but the color looks a bit off".. "if you're unhappy with the guitar I'll give you your money back".
But dude, why lie about it?

People... :fp:

I'm pretty sure the pickguard was for sale with the body and the neck on ebay.
I almost bought a very very very similar pickguard, with the very same scratches on the lower horn (the only horn actually :D ) while a blue body and a blue neck were on sale (or one week later).
But yeah, that Mustang looks so :? :-*
And if she plays good :)

It looks great. I contemplated doing this when I was assembling a refin '66 , but decided I'd only do it to a body with contours.

Hey guys
A little update. I CANT PUT IT DOWN! The neck is pretty nice!

It must be a good thing.

The pickups are from 69' I think, but sound pretty good. Dunno if there's the big difference. So not as original as I hoped for, but then again... I can't put it down. My gf hates me these days.

Gotta get a staytrem bridge, because this JM bridge is driving me nuts.

I don't think it has a clear coat, but the color looks pretty darn cool... 8)
