1964 Jazzmaster Refin

Post by Towomba » Thu Sep 20, 2018 10:01 am

Hi guys,

I‘m considering this ‘64 refin Jazzy: https://www.vintage-guitar.de/detailsvi ... aster.html

Any advice and talking points? The shop didnt open it up yet, it just arrived.

Its an older refin, you can see a white undercoat on some pics. Original colour not known (yet). The lacquer on headstock, near contour body decal seems strange.

Any advice much appreciated.

Greetings!

I can't help much, as there are many members that have more experience than me with vintage JM's. But just out of curiosity, how do you know it's not nitro? I didn't see that statement on the listing. The refin doesn't look great on the pictures (orange peel?), but it could just be the pictures. I like the color though. Anyway, if the guitar is an all original 1964 except for the refin, the price seems ok (for Europe at least).

Well, I got something wrong. You are right, it is not known to me or written that its not nitro. Sorry! I changed the original post.

Fine looking refin and good that the back of the neck is(most likely) still the original finish.
The price seems high to me, on the other hand: Vintage JM prices increased a lot over the past few years, so most likely OK'ish for Europe.
In any case: try to get it for less than the asking price, especially if it comes without a case.
But: do you like Jumbo Frets? Many people do and prefer jumbo's. I don't so I would not consider it at all, but that's just me.
The shop itself is definitely one of the few in Europe that you can trust:

Thanks for your input.

I loved (6105?) medium jumbo on my strat. Spaghetti vintage frets on my ’65 Jaguar have some special flavour, but I’d say I prefer medium jumbo without knowing how they‘d perform on a Jazzmaster. Dont think much different though.

Anyway, I asked and the reply was theyre „meaty“, maybe 70% of the jumbos I guess. Would try it anyway.

Agree on the price and yeah, sadly they increased pretty much.

looks good! i think the photos are giving the wrong impression because the whole image looks greenish. that might explain why this fiesta red is looking kind of orange

Update: neck date says 63, newer pots from 66 (no idea why). Seller says „it‘s not nitro“

They put some more pics online from the electrics and stuff, you can have a look via the link in first post.

I‘m happy for some JM experts to chime in :)

All the best

I bought nearly the same Jazzy there about a year ago. I am really happy with it.
And I also bought a fiesta red Jaguar there. I picked it up there at the shop. Nice guys I have to say.
You can play and test everything you want.
So the Jazzy looks cool for me. I have a fiesta red ´63 JM already and would buy it again. (and I paid 4000€, which was okay for me for this guitar.)
The guys there make a good setup. They love guitars. :)
Okay, it´s not complete original but, yes, ask for a bit lower price.
It starts... when it begins.

Sorry, again I'm not one of the specialist, so take my comments for what they're worth.

Funny stuff under the pickups ;)
Why the yellow tape on the neck pickup hot wire?
I was surprised to see the black bobbins, but on a 1963 that makes sense. I would ask for pictures of the winding, then ask for Andrew Short's opinion (Andrewaward on here).

No visible body marks, again I'm not competent to assume anything, but that would bother me.

I still think the refin doesn't look great. I would consider a restoration, but even if the original color is still under the poly (which is not unlikely since they didn't bother to take the shielding out before painting), it would be a long and difficult process... or a better refin.

Do you have the opportunity to go at the shop and try the guitar?

Sounds nice indeed.

And no, not for me. I‘m still considering my options and watching the market. Nice guitar though, hope it‘ll make someone happy.
