First post here after a long time lurking, thanks for all your shared wisdom.
There's a 62 JM for sale near me, which I'd value any input on: https://reverb.com/item/15201802-fender ... aged-white
The switch tip appears to be a replacement, but a number of things seem to check out; serial number, single-line klusons, bridge, clay dots.
The pics aren't definitive but I'm fairly sure it's a slab board - the serial number puts it a couple of thousand before the lam boards were introduced, and there's a bit of curve to the rosewood behind the nut.

Does anything else catch your eye? Thanks in advance

I saw this too - local to me as well - very nice and looks like its been well cared for over the years!

The body seems really white. Especially when you compare it to the PU-covers and the vol- and tone knob. Could be a refin?

Definitely looks like a slab board. I'd ask for some pictures of the neck pocket, the finish looks suspiciously white. It also looks like there might be some damage to the rosewood by the trussrod screw, hard to tell though.

Almost certainly refinished, non original case, body way too white especially compared to rest of parts..also neck looks way too glossy.

So way overpriced.

Looks almost unplayed, strange if the owner was in the ships band...

As soon as I hear a description that involves a deceased uncle or a beloved father who worked in the Sri Lankan armed forces who obtained the guitar from a mysterious veiled woman at midnight, my antennae start to twitch hugely.

They are twitching right now.

Looks exactly like my '62 which I've owned for 30 years. Which was refinished in polyester in the 70s.

I have no doubt whatsoever it's a refin. Colour of the paint and the non-matching headstock alone are warning signs. "We had it assessed and it's genuine" is the final one. Save your money and buy an honest sunburst. It probably is all original parts - it is indeed the correct slab board and markers etc for that date, but from the photos it's impossible to see if the neck finish is original too.

If it were an original finish which had miraculously not yellowed nor changed in hue, a seller would show you detailed photos, under the scratchplate etc, which showed it's original. You would need positive evidence - and they've consciously avoided giving you any. "It's genuine" could mean it's a genuine Tokai or whatever you want it to mean, and they've shown irrelevant photos of a much later tag from some other item rather than pictures of the guitar you're shelling out £4k for! Is a little handwritten note from last week saying "important guitar" supposed to impress us?

So I don't think it's an honest guitar and I don't feel that the sellers have given us an honest description.

Also...I just noticed that hang tag is from an early 70's fender amp..not a guitar.

exactly. and we get two photos of that and no detailed ones of the guitar finish. Which tells you all you need to know.

i bought this about a month ago for way less than half the original asking price!!!!

( i am 21 and the seller realised i wasn't buying this to make money on etc its my dream guitar and thus i bought it to keep for life)

the owners were lovely and it was the mans dads, he was only happy to sell to me as i am so young and literally borrowed the 1000 from my parents as well as got a 400 mile round train from leeds to pick it up, the case was terrible and weighed a ton so i used a gig bag i had and told them they could keep that.

if anyone has any questions just ask?
