Man, that thing is waaaay smaller than it looked in the first photos! But yeah, just change the strings for some lighter ones and get it set up properly and see how far that gets you. If you're still not happy maybe try a new bridge as Mgeek says, but for god's sake keep the old one and don't drill any extra holes or anything. Cheapo Rickenbacker-style bridges tend to work really well on guitars like these too.

yeah those Rickenbacker knockoffs are great- narrower spacing, like I bet this has. Might even be that the mounting screws line up...with some luck

I don't consider myself an intonation freak by any stretch of the imagination but I haven't got any time for a straight line, non adjustable bridge...there has to be SOMETHING, even if it's just a set pattern like you get on those sorkins! ;)

Ive figured a problem about string height out: the strings that come from the tremolo are quiet high and if i turn the existing bridge down it wont have tension. Seems like the last owner has seen that and used those heavy gauge strings to keep them in place without changing hardware on it.
At the one Guitar that i built myself I've used one Rickenbacker knockoff bridge and it works perfectly! But atm it wouldn't solve that problem.

Thats bad, cause the neck can't be adjusted to work the problem out..

Buzzstop could work or something like that just between the tremolo and the bridge:

Can't you just shim the neck? It's a bolt on, right?

Ha, seems like I come up against that 'strings leaving the tremolo, up in the sky, ruining the break angle' problem on every guitar I encounter at the moment.

Makes the trems on 90% of Burns Sonics and Vibra Artistes totally unusable, and on my Vox Phantom, though I can shim the neck, it's a really delicate balancing act.
