Trio of Gold Guards

Post by bterry » Wed Dec 12, 2018 9:20 am

Had an opportunity to hang out and compare some rare and just killer gold guard JMs yesterday - pictured L 2 R: my 1958 Gold, 1959 Fiesta (or, possibly Roman Red), 1958 SB...

Ok, so obviously the photo is incredible. But you said you had a chance to compare them...so? How did they differ? How did they play? Did they all sound as great as you'd expect?

I don't wanna shake hands with the gold one's previous owner. Must take xenomorph blood to wear the gold off that guard and you don't see fret dots stained that dark too often!

i'd rock all 3 but the order is the important part.

middle right then left.

:? Makes my trio of vintage JM’s look like child’s play... I still think the gold is my favorite.

Damn! Stunning to have that opportunity. Curious how they compared as well. What were the necks like, playability, sound, etc.
Anything that struck you as particularly amazing or anything that caught you off guard? (pun intended!)

Nice! Looks like you were at Guitar Maniacs? I was there today and didn't see any Jazzies. They are selling my Fiesta Jaguar there though. :) (And my Tonemaster.)

They were all pretty similar, actually, excluding some minor differences you could attribute to any set of three pieces of wood and materials.

The main differences were that my goldie and the SB were a lot more played/worn in, so they did sound a bit more open and rich to my ears. The '59 red JM is so clean and barely played, it just had a newer guitar sound, for lack of a better explanation. Needs some friendly abuse :) This could be down to psychology, though - who knows what perceptions can do, maybe recorded you wouldn't be able to tell the difference, or, maybe the lacquer worn off the guards and necks does produce a different tone...

The necks were somewhat similar in shape, though my '58 was the slimmest near the nut, a typical carve for the '58s and '59s but just tapered a bit more than the others.

All three look amazing! Are they all original finishes? A fantastic trio in all honesty...
