People are all over the map here when it comes to their feelings about “originality”, but we tend to agree that you should get what you pay for.

There are always others. Fiesta red is my favorite custom color, so I probably led with my heart over my head on this one.

I have four vintage jags:
original 66 B&B sunburst
refin 66 Oly White B&B (refin organised by me)
refin 66 Foam green D&B (refin organised by me)
refin partscaster 63/64/66 D&B translucent/pearl like sonic blue (refin organised by me)

The best one of the four by a long way is the 63/64/66 partscaster.

Sometimes (if you have the time and the patience) creating your own vintage guitar from available parts produces magic.
plus you then do not have to pay a premium for "original paint/finish"

Good attitude. When considering vintage, the question of what you know and how you know it must always preceed the question of what you should do. If you aren’t sure of the what and how, post here before pulling the trigger. Vintage requires a lot of context, and some refins are so good even the old skool are fooled. In this case Andrew is spot on: refin, and done badly.

3300 is way too much to spend on a dubious guitar. You'll find something better, or maybe piece one together as someone else suggested.
It's not rocket science, and if you're looking for a player, you'll end up with something that you'll feel connected to.

To me what had me thinking it was worth a look was that someone clearly went to a fair amount of trouble making this look like an authentic 62 custom color in some ways. The fairly convincing mint guard. The headstock finish and the logo also seemed convincing to me. With the nail holes and what not, it seemed pretty solid as a vintage body, and the neck of course looks almost certainly to be a '62. Also, the fiesta red isn't new looking to me...it has some age to it. So what I was thinking was: why would someone go through all the trouble to make it a fairly convincing 62 custom color and then savage it with that pathetically awful sanding job? I told myself that maybe it was an original Fiesta Red over CAR or Dakota, and then at some point during it's life some clueless owner decided to try to stip the paint before changing his mind.

Ah well. It's an interesting guitar, but not for me.

Definitely refinished, and the price was the first hint. An original Fiesta Red Jaguar is going to cost a fat stack of money. To my eyes, the neck has also been refinished, not just the body.

I'm not sure why they don't come right out and say "refinished", it would have saved some time & trouble! Nothing wrong with a refinished guitar that is advertised as such.

look up close at the headstock photo, so sloppy.


then look at the pic of the back of the neck. there's paint stuck to it. the person who painted it probably didn't let it dry.

that's my opinion!

whoever spray painted it was probably like uh oh this looks terrible let's sand it off, then gave up. looks like they did this while it was still wet... see that area on the body where there is a dislocated chunk of paint that stuck back on.

I would go to Reverb on this and show them the earlier listing if they want to put you on the hook for any money on this transaction.

Granted, we don’t know how the seller acquired this guitar, but if they bought it from the previous seller through Reverb they will have that on record.

700+ positive feedback or not it’s dishonest to represent this as an orginal finish guitar if you know better.

I would expect a 1962 Fender to have a fully painted neck pocket. The paint stick started in 1963. There are other tells, and this guitar fails them all.

When something looks too good to be true (Fiesta Red pre-CBS Jaguar for $3000), it definitely is!

I see it's back for sale at 26% discount but no mention of the refinish. Very poor practice from the seller. It should be explicitly stated not just as 'project' but as a refinish but 'project' implies that there is something up with it....
