Huge guitar auction in UK (Pete Overend Watts)

Post by kimson » Fri Feb 15, 2019 12:03 am

Over 500 items, most of them guitars. Dozens and dozens of oddball vintage guitars. Also '63 Jag, '66 refin Duo-Sonic, Pawn Shop Mustang.

Dang, there’s a TON of cool guitars in that auction. Estimates are low on a lot of them, too.

Jeez. SO MANY GUITARS. I wonder how well maintained and set up they are? I mean, that guy played in an accomplished band and all that, but with so many I suspect there hasn't been a guitar-tech lovingly looking after each one like it's a museum piece.

In his classic autobiography "Diary of a Rock `n' Roll Star" , Ian Hunter tell stories about guitar hunting in USA back in the early 70´s. amd the stupid prices they paid.
I wonder if some of these guitars are mentioned there... maybe I should re-read it.

Wow... the price estimates are way off on a lot of those.

like this one
or this one
I suppose they'll end up going for a lot more than that

I'd definitely go if I lived anywhere near there though

was this made before or after the Eastwood signature EEG?

They do these auctions quarterly I think...I bid online and won something in the last one, in December. Got it for the lower end of the estimate, which was nice ;)

Noticed that a cool Maton solid went for not much in the same one

Pretty sure that's a Silver Series from the early nineties, rather than 80s as listed- I had one just like it when I was a teenager...a few came in surf green at first, and the earliest ones didn't have a 'silver series' logo on the headstock

Only the first 70 guitars are Pete's.

I go to this auction occasionally...always best to go there and inspect everything. And remember you pay 27% on top of the hammer price..plus they don't ship. You have to pick it up. I find you end up with stuff you didn't plan to buy!..And all the stuff you did want goes for way higher than you expected.

Quite eclectic...

I feel that a lot of the vintage pieces there have the potential to go for a lot more than the estimates. There's so much here, though. Some people will walk out with bargains.

Is it not a bit odd to see that Squier Bullet and a few other very (very) low-end, non-vintage guitars in there...?

A lot of those Mott the Hoople guitars look like they were stored in an attic or shed. Poor things.

As for 27% on top of the hammer price... TWENTY SEVEN?!?! :derp:

The rival guitar auction service that's just starting up charges a lot less than that on the hammer price.

Haha my experience is literally the opposite of this...I ended up with *exactly* what I wanted to buy, without having seen it in person, and got it shipped to me via the couriers they recommend on their site. All in I think I paid 240 when the hammer price was 150...a price I was happy to pay.

surprised Lot 132 hasn't elicited any comment here. a bit rich for my blood :D but a unique piece for the right collector -
